Honor Flight Delivery

For my Quilters Accountability this week I would really like to account for where a LOT of Quilts of Valor went!! This was quite a week.
`
First off - although I have no pictures of this - 32 Quilts of Valor went to the Dave Roever Eagles Summit Ranch. He does an intensive camp with Wounded Warriors. The Soldiers were so touched, and amazed, and these quilts brought tears to their eyes.

`
Secondly on Saturday night the Honor Flight Northern Colorado arrived back home from a wonderful trip to Washington DC to see the WWII Memorial. They were greeted at the hotel with a standing ovation and a very enthusiastic crowd.
`
Each WWII vet was presented a Quilt of Valor as they walked down the long hallway. It was awesome. And the smiles - oh Lordy the smiles. If you could just bottle a few of those up you would never have sad times again.

`


Even though these were presented on a Late ( and boy do I mean LATE) Saturday night - I have already recieved a few thanks you's.
And they asked if I would share. I do make a small booklet to go with each QOV on how a Quilt is made, and that many many people all over the US have helped to make this possible.

"Please share with all of those who were involved. I enjoyed meeting some of you upon our return from D.C but tired and emotionally drained would only begin to describe my state of mind!

Neat Quilt!! For an army blanket kind of a guy this is a very significant upgrade. I can only imgine the time, effore and concern that went into its making. I am honored X 12.

All of these wondeful quilts were made for our WWII Honor Flight Veterans! They come from Brighton MI , sent to me by Ann M, and quilted by Mavis S.

I like that the quilting was different on each quilt. And it really makes the ones that look alike - different!

WWII Honor Flight Quilts

The goal HAS been met!! ( the rest of the quilts will be shown in tomorrows post!)

I am WAY excited, and these are such gorgeous quilts. The WWII Veterans will be SUPER excited, and so grateful to recieve these. I believe that it is a surprise to them!

The first quilt today is from Kim in Colorado. Beautiful and soft!!

The next two were made by Sue S in Colorado. I call her Sister Sue - because her sister is in my guild and I like saying that to her. Some day I will meet Sue, and tease her that she is my sister vicariously. ( I don't have sisters - so I need a few!) Thanks Sue!!

The blocks were made by Various quilters in her group, and she put it together and quilted it. All of the makers even signed the label on the back.

This lovely quilt to the left was made by April W. She has quilted some of the Quilts of Valor for me, and made some as well. This one is just wonderful!! Thanks April!!

The next five quilts came from New York, via a road trip to Arizona, Colorado , Illinois and back. They have traveled quite a distance to get here!! Jackie D from New York brought them out as she and her husband were mountain biking and traveling across the US. It worked out for her to meet me on Friday. Such a great person!!

Some more WWII QOV's

You might get a kick out of this. Yesterday we had a snow day called for school, and first thing in the morning the roads were horrible, semis were crawling. But at 10 am my UPS driver showed up. I was shocked - usually when we have 10 inches of snow our road is a mess. He said it was no problem, then 30 minutes later the Fed Ex driver came up.

Apparently the snow wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be, or maybe they knew how important these Quilts were!!
`
This first quilt on the top left was made by Nancy L in Washington. Isn't is cool. Thank you Nancy!! A WWII Vet is going to cherish it.

This star quilt ( can you say stunning!) Was made by Mavis S in Michigan. She sent this quilt to go to the WWII honor flight in honor of her Father 2nd LT John S. 5th Army Medical Corp. Mavis - he would be honored to have such a beautiful quilt dedicated to him!

This Not So Top Secret Quilt ( pattern at side bar) was made, and quilted by Cindy P in ME. It is beautiful, and the quilting - oh my. You do good work Cindy!

This quilt was made by Candy C in New york and quilted by Nancy S in Florida. A great combination if I do say so myself.

And the last WWII Quilt of Valor was made by Emily in FL, and quilted by Nancy in Fl. I believe it is a pineapple quilt, and have seen the pattern on Quiltville.com It is quite lovely.

WWII Quilts of Valor

These two wonderful quilts came from Eileen in MD for the WWII Honor Flight Veterans, Eileen - they are perfect!!

I think this first one is a trip around the world style quilt. It is quite stunning and looks like it takes careful planning,

The next one - I think - is a Warm Wishes quilt. This pattern should be able to be found online for free at mccalls quilting?

I am now at home sitting in front of the fire, totally believing the weather people. This morning is was nice, by noon - 70 degrees. We had a picnic... a real outside picnic. By the time we made it to the gun range for target practice at 6pm we were in winter coats and gloves!! They say we will wake up to snow.... hmmm... I was really ready for spring!

Thank you from a WWII vet

Dear Quilters:
I was trained in the Army Infantry. I was drafted into the Army. I was 18 years old. I started out at Ft Knox, Kentucky, I guarded the gold.

I am from a family of 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls.
*
Four boys served in the Korean War and WWII. One of my brothers was wounded when his aircraft carrier was sunk.
*
I taught school in Colorado after my service, 5th grade was my favorite. And as a student in LaSalle - I had perfect attendance for 9 years.
*
The Quilt of Valor is priceless. We have the quilt displayed on our curved stair case. The colors are gorgeous, and I am SO proud of this gift.

WWII Quilts of Valor

This wonderful wonderful quilt shop in Topeka, Kansas - The Fabric Corner sent in these awesome Quilts of Valor for our Veterans. I, of course, had to spread them out in the front room for inspection! Made my room look very patriotic!

Aren't these the lovliest quilts? ( PS - there are 10 of them!)

A WWII QOV and pillowcases

I recieved a cool envelope stuffed into my mailbox. I am SO glad we got a big mailbox!! These 5 pillowcases were in the bag from Susan in Mass. Thanks Susan! They are perfect! And yes - she counted them into the all people quilt million pillowcase challenge.

The next box I recieved had this beautiful string Quilt of Valor in it. It was made by Drue in OK. She wants it to go to a WWII vet in honor of her father in law, also a WWII vet. Drue - it is just gorgeous!!

Lois

Lois has been a busy busy busy quilter! She machine quilted all of these Quilts of Valor. I am glad that she was on a roll.

This first green scrappy quilt was pieced by Rosemary F. It is really cool looking quilt!
`
The next 5 quilts were all pieced by Elsie, and sent to Lois to Quilt. Elsie is 71 and I think she may have this piecing thing down!

Quilters Accountability Report

Ackkk Its Wednesday... how did that happen?

So the recap - Januarys Goals:
`
1. Quilt 15 Quilts of Valor. This may be a little tougher than I first imagined - but the month still has time in it. Here are Two that I quilted this week. Both of them are Chunky Churndashes - from the Quilt of Valor Sew Along that we had this September.

The Top one is made by my Mom, and I quilted it with an "Echoed Spine" pattern that I found in Suzanne Earleys Meandering Magic book I liked it, and it wasn't too extremely difficult.

The next one was made by Me - and I let the kids at schoolpick out a quilting pattern. They chose Double Hearts and Loops Panto.
It turned out very nice. They chose well.





#2 was to piece Bonnies mystery - I am still working on Clue 3. Oh well, I had hoped to move on, but I have about 1/3 left of the clue to do. I may have to give up sleep!

#3 Weekly Menus - oh baby yah! And it certainly helps when your mom calls and says I will make dinner for Saturday .... yep! I am liking this. I have food, I know what to cook - no one is starving yet.

`
#4 Exercise 20 minutes every work day.
Done. Thur:Yoga, Fri: Jillians 30 day shred level 2, Mon: Wii Fit, tues Jillian Level 1, Wed: Wii Fit ... and about the starving comment - no one else besides me is starving. How come when you exercise you get hungry???

Quilters Accountability

Bari - over at http://crossroadsquilts.wordpress.com/ is doing a Quilters Accountability for 2010. I did not have UFO's and the end of 2008, umm, I do now.... But we will not talk numbers, just suffice it to say when I thought about counting and organizing them, Wrangler Man retreated to the Garage.... his man cave!

So I thought I would participate in QA in my own way, with Monthly goals.

My January Goals are to quilt 15 Quilts of Valor. This Lone Star is QOV #1. It was made by Donna in Golden and it was just lovely to begin with. I had fun quilting it. I decided to do some swirly feathers with RWB thread in the Star, and Black in the black.

`

Here is the back. I was a little worried using Black thread on a Light Background - but I think it worked ok.

I have a second QOV project going on. If you remember last year we were invited to give out some quilts to the Returning WWII vets on the Honor Flight. The vets were so enthused by these quilts that we have been asked to do it again. I need 50 quilts by April 20th - so this will be a WWII QOV. Wish me luck!

The Second Quilt of Valor was pieced by Sheree in Heartstrings. I sent the dog panels to Sheree to be used, I just didn't know she would come up with this Wonderful Top. I Love it - Little bit, who wants 14 million puppies is really in love with it.

Goal #2: Piece Bonnie's Carolina Christmas Mystery. ( simple enough right?)

I have finished Clue Two, and am halfway thru with clue 3. I have run out of the Black on white background, but I know I have more in my stash - I am kind of afraid to go look at my stash... but I will!

The By Product of Clue 3 is a lot of tiny 1/2 square triangles. I have had one suggestion to make pinwheels out of them for a border... any other ideas.. I think there is a million....

Goal #3 Plan a Weekly Menu -

This week - so far so good, I have had everything on hand due to our shopping trip, and although tomorrow is grocery day, I have enough food for another nights meal if it continues to blizzard like it is....

Goal #4 - Exercise 20 minutes every weekday.

Yep - I have done it every day - even Saturday and Sunday... I am nuts!

I have Biked, Done Wii Fitness and started Jillians 30 day Shred ( ugh)
