Square in a Square Ice Crystals... and Finished ( or not) Friday

This has been a quilt a long time in the making....

In Nov of 2020 I was opening boxes - and I found one that had a few blocks, some pieces and parts, and a ruler!! The full story is here: What was in the Box

Well!! I got the top put together, and for some reason - I didn't get to the quilting as fast as I had planned - but!! That is now remedied.... and get this... not only did I quilt it... I bound it... oh yes - that was why the East coast got hammered.... Sorry folks ( better than lightening striking me tho!!)

Here you go!!

I am pretty sure (but not 100% Confident) that the name of the block pattern is called Ice Crystals. Only appropriate to show the ice crystals on our deck right?

I had fun quilting it - I used a super dense motif in the open spaces, and in the *crystals* I used a feather motif. I really like how it turned out.

And for some reason - I used Yellow thread for the back. I am not sure if I just wasn't awake yet - or???? but it kinda gives it a really cool look on the back. Its more textury than out standy  ( yes - those are words - I just heard them in my head!)

One more Down!!! Whoot Whoot!!

alright - that is my brag for the week - What have you got finished up?  Share away!!

THE BOX... that embarrassing box

A few years ago my Guild hosted a UFO challenge, and I gleefully said... I can not participate... I do not *have* UFOs.... if only they could see me now.... *sigh*

Remember last week? I said I found a box... well... I did... and in it were 3 blocks and parts of blocks and a BOOK!

Glad the book was there - reminds me of what the project was...

But then I posted on my guild page - Hey does anyone remember when we took that Square in a Square class... and someone said 2004 and I went - oops!!!  I have a  UFO!!  AND!! Apparently I have had it for a long time... Oh boy.....

UFO NO MORE!!!

I finished up those parts into blocks, and then figured since I had 5 blocks... It could become something - and so it is!

Of course it need quilting...But I can do that!!! ha ha!!

Fingers crossed that was the ONLY UFO I have... but no promises... raising kids fries your brain....

( PS - the book was Square in a Square from Jodi Barrows)

Color Palette Challenge Finish ( Finally)

Way back in the Dark Ages  Vicki W and Judy L hosted a Color Palette Challenge....

Alright - it was really 2012.... but today - that seems like a Lonnnnng Looooong way aways ago.

Each Month they would present a photo that they had changed into a color palette , which you were to use to pull your fabrics and make something.

Here was the Palette for March - and boy Oh Boy did I struggle to find fabrics... But I persevered!

This is the little quilt that I made
It is 36 x 54 inches

and ( Katie Z sit Down!!)  I bound it this week!!
Yep - I did - for real

Here's a little close up of the quilting

And my Artsy Fartsy Shot
It should be in a magazine right?
I just crack myself up!

Oh!! And the back!
It is to the left of the Color Palette
So I included it too!

And... Another one Bites the dust!!

Chimney Sweep Quilt ( aka OMG and UFO) Finish!!

I rose to the challenge, and conquered the pile, I stitched until I could stitch no more.....

and Voila!!!

my January One Monthly Goal/ UFO is ......... Finished.......

And just to add a little statistics to your day... that makes 4  finishes... Lawsy Mercy, I do not know what Wrangler Man is feeding me, but he had better keep it up !!!!

I took it out to our new fence
I thought that would be such a pretty place to photograph it

and I was photobombed!!! By a cat
I sort of cropped her out

and the wind was blowing
and it was about 21 degrees

but I was warm
I was jumping with joy and happiness

Before I even knew that Purple was the Rainbow Color of the Month I had already picked out purples to accentuate this - and I was so glad.... I used the cut offs of the backings for my churn dashes -

scrap management people!!!!  Bwahh haa haa

it is now listed in my Etsy Store ... if you know anyone looking for Green and purples - send them that way.....

Modern Crazy - aka Slice and Dice is FINISHED!!

A Million years ago I took a wacky crazy piecing class from an incredibly talented Melody Randol. It was early on in my quilting career - circa 2009.  I had all these fun amazing crazy pieces, and I didn't finish it ( surprise right????)

Then in 2013 there was a UFO challenge, and I pulled the pieces out and started making blocks.

In May 2013 I actually got the top finished ( I know cuz I searched my blog) and it has been hanging in my quilting Queue since then. However, until I searched by Blog - I really didn't think it was that long ago..... *sigh*    the story of my life.....

Today I would like to announce to you that
IT   IS     FINISHED

I have been calling it Slice and Dice, and Modern Crazy - but it really does need a name....

AND!!!   The inside of the blocks ( before the framing) were made prior to Modern Quilting becoming a thing. a term, a quilt show.... Imagine that ;-)

Just for fun - here are some of the posts of it being created:

Plenty of Progress???

In December I got to go to a Quilt Retreat, and I LOVED it so much!  I came home and asked Wrangler Man - how do I make that happen here? At Home?

Then Judy said she was going to host a Monthly Blog Quilt a Thon.  We talked about it, and thought maybe I could just pretend that those were my new *at home retreat* days.... and then the day came....

and we had snow, and ice, and the water tank heater needed human help, and the horses hooves needed human help, and ... then there were sports.....  and well - you all know that the whole *retreat* thing did not happen.

However!!!   I still got a lot done ( well a lot in my world)

Tip #1 to myself - Prepare anyways.  Prep your 2-3 projects you are going to work on and hide the rest.

Tip #2 to myself - Plan meals, and prep them ahead of time.... and even if the ranch work falls in on you, you still have a nice warm dinner.

My First Project - my January UFO/OMG - got all 12 blocks made and then put these little borders on them.... I have a plan people - I have a plan now!!

Project #2
Quilted a little bit.   I might have a LOT of my own tops that need to be quilted. If they are QOV"s for some reason I am more dedicated in getting them quilted - here is to the Year of Quilting on my own!

Project #3
En Provence

I am changing the colors just a little - those 4 white squares around the star are supposed to be yellow, and I didn't like it... Didn't hate it - but didn't like it - so!  I now have 1 whole block made, and am ready to dig in to the other 15

( oh ya - Part A of Clue 7 is all done)

Project #4

Mystery #5 - This is one of those - I can;t show you but.......  parts.....

I host the MysteryQuilts4Military Yahoo Group - and our Next mystery starts next month - so I was finishing up the final details..... you should join in - it is going to be fun!!!

And when you are done- you will have a Quilt of Valor ready to go!
I know that lots of coordinators are needing quilts, and lots of groups would love to have you help out!!

Project #5 - ha ha - had you.... #5 was to take a nap.....

I am doing it!! I am jumping in!!! I am ready..... until 5pm tonite I am sure - but this morning!! I am pumped up - ready to go, go for the win ( ok the finish!!)

This is my January Project!

This Block!!! It is the Chimney Sweep Block and I am in love with it! I wanted to use 2 1/2 inch strips though and EVERY pattern I found was for bigger strips!! What is a girl to do?

I wrote my own!! and it is here - if you want to attempt it   Quiltygirl's Craftsy Site   ( It's free)

My Mission - should I choose to accept it!!!  Finish making the WHOLE TWELVE Blocks

And!!

Make a Quilt - I mean for real - set them, quilt it.... and the kicker.... Bind it!!

If I get to the binding you can bet there will be a reward of some kind.... A day in the mountains?  A hike someplace?  Or Wrangler Man cleans the kitchen?  hmmmmm what shall it be!!

To push me forward I am linking up with Elm Street Quilts' One Monthly Goal Challenge

Last Retreat Day

The last day of the Quilt retreat was a short but sweet morning - I stitched till 9 am then headed down the mountain.

BUT!!! If you know me well, it was not a straight shot down for me... there were so very many trails to discover and , well, take a photo or three......

This block is now finished and was a test -
Mama Sparks is going to host a Quilt A long for 2017 and I wanted to see if I could use this as a leader ender project. So it was my Leader ender for the retreat - and I finished enough to make one whole block..... so it is feasible

And then.... My Outdoor Photos!!

This mountain was right outside
I saw it every day in the windows
my Quilting pals love me - they set me at a table facing this!!!!

And there were mountain streams to explore

And pretty trails to walk up.....

All in all - not a bad place to rejuvenate!!

Retreat Day 2 Continued

So!!!  After finishing my Quilt in a Bag and my Nine Patch - I decided on a more Geometric Quilt!!

A Spiderweb Quilt!!
(Free pattern found here: http://www.maryquilts.com/spiderweb-quilt/  )

I made all my stippie blocks
( And drank more water)

And then I diagonaled them
( And drank more water)

Then I made them into fun blocks
( and drank more water)

and finally I started sashing them!!!

and you couldn't stop there
I rowed them
( and drank more water)

And added a cool scrappy Blue border
( and drank more water)

And then it was night time
and I kept my roommates awake all night
making trips to the bathroom
( and drinking more water)

Retreat Day 2

Are you ready to  see my Day Two projects?  I was told to take at least one project for each day..... so I obliged!!!

sent me this precut Quilt in a Bag .... and I started in!!

Prepping the squares

and stitching along!!

We were up at high elevations - so we had an official "Drink" person
It was so cute - every so often she would yell Drink!
And we would all take big glugs of our water.

No one wanted to get altitude sickness - and staying hydrated was the best way to counteract it

I might have drank enough water though - that I was swimming!!

After all the blocks were sewn this was the layout I decided on
and by adding border
it is 64 x 64

But!!! I wasn't finished yet!!!
This took me through Day 1 and a little of Day 2 - so I started another project......

You'll have to come back to see it.....
