Valentine Quilts

My mom wasn't really a Quilter, she classified herself as a writer.

She wasn't really all that enthralled with sewing. However her mother was a huge seamstress, made almost all of her children's clothes (even her son's boxer shorts ) .

But because I wanted to learn how to sew, my Grandma and Neighbor Annie taught me, and my Mom continued the lessons at home.

When I got into Quilting , my mom and I were shopping and she found a valentine jelly roll. She purchased it without ever telling me what she planned to do.

I did get a call from her. She asked if it was OK to use regular fabric and flannel fabric at the same time.

I said, of course, it's your quilt. You get to do whatever you want.

And a few months later, she showed up with this quilt and asked me to quilt it for her.

I think she had fun - she used Flannel  Cotton and  Polar fleece!! it is a very warm quilt!  She wasn't really hooked on Quilting tho - as a Grandma , she did decide she needed to make Quilts for my Niece and Nephew. So she did. 

And the 4 years we needed over 1000 Quilts of Valor - She got to pieceing!! She even recruited her church ladies, and bible study ladies. She continued for quite a few years - but when we started to need only 500+ per year, she started to retire from quilting.

I kept her Valentine Quilt and its out on the couch now - I am decorated for Valentines Day 💖💖

When K's Grandma had to go into a Nursing home it was around Valentines Day - so I made a Quilt exactly like this for her. Since it uses Fat Quarters - I purchased Half yards so I could make two quilts.

When she passed - her roommate at the Nursing home asked if she could have Grammys Quilt - so we all said yes - and I just *had* to make another. ( you can tell how much I resisted 😆😇)

I am thinking - Since I have three kids - Maybe I should quilt that Pink Diamonds up and make it the third Valentine Quilt?

The Dash to Hawaii .... and Finished ( or not) Friday!!!

Just in case you want to know.. there is snow... there is snow on top of snow. While it might not be  the dire straights that other parts of the country are in.... I might be dreaming of oceans... and sun, and ....

Those dreams inspired me to finish:

The Dash To Hawaii... for while I am stitching it - I can dream of water, waves, and sun....

And then Back to reality - haha!!!

These Blue skies have not been seen regularly - we got about a 20 minute break then back to fog and drizzle.  But don't the happy prints make you think sun.... 

Looks like I forgot an up close of the quilting - but I quilted Hibiscus Flowers all over it - and I even used a Hawaiian theme backing... its just florally all over!!

We had snow again yesterday - and I got lazy and didn't want to dig my 4 wheeler out to go feed, so I used the kids sled.... They are too small for my kids now - but it was perfect for my grain buckets. My calves were staring at that sled like it would come to life and attack them!!!

That is my finish this week, and now -I had better get working on something for next week!!!!

Happy Half Square Block TWELVE

 Whoop Whoop!! We have hit the three month mark!!  and!! I still have drawings to keep making more!!

Here is Block Twelve!!

Greek Key Log Cabin is growing!!

I was so inspired by all your interest last week - I just had to sit down and keep stitching on this one ... I want to see what it is going to become!!

I have all the ones I cut now put into blocks - and I think!! I want at least 6 more blocks.... ( maybe more... I get wishy washy haha)

I added some Red Plaids in there too - I think they add interest... 

A lot of you asked which die... well - do NOT look at all the other piles of stuff... I am not a clean quilter - but this is the die - it was called a Log Cabin Block on board.  So I cut one layer of white with one layer of the dark to make the whole block... 

and I laid them out in a baking pan by number!!  But then I got wise and realized I could cut 4 lights , and then 4 darks, lay them out by number, and not have to separate pieces when I got to sewing more than one block!

Now!! A few of you said you were digging in and making this one - 1 I demand photos... and 2. Do NOT rub it in if you finish before me ( promise?? ha ha)

Also - Colorado is ON FIRE

We can see the smoke from the fire on the western side... ( as well as the one just north east of us) but Saturday night that west fire just Blew up - the sunset was kind creepy!

I am off to golf a little this morning - then come back and cut Six more blocks!!! Sounds like a great Labor Day right?

Greek Key Log Cabin Quilt.... a start

 How many of you have an AccuQuilt Cutter?

I have one, I probably don't make the best use of it, mostly because I start cutting a new quilt in the middle of the night, and my cutter is downstairs, and its dark down there.... and you know... dark.....

But!! with lots of people  home, and a son,  who is awesome - we pulled it out and he started cutting up my scraps. I have the Strip dies, and that was it.... until!!

We started checking out the website and we found the Log Cabin Block on Board die, and we started coloring stuff.... and!! We decided we wanted to try the Greek Key Log cabin, and so.... I bought myself a present - and Looky what got  started!!

But here is a funny thing... I bought this block on board and then I thought... let me buy the 5 inch half square die - that might be fun... 

I ALWAYS get confused between finished and unfinished terms, and even after making mistake after mistake about it - I still get them messed up - so when my 5 inch half squares turned out 5 inches... I was all upset with my sewing skills!!

I couldn't believe that after all these years I couldn't master a 1/4 inch seam.... welllllllll.....

I headed back to the website - and guess what! The 5 inch die is meant to make 5 inch half squares.... Hunh!! Funny right??

I have to admit - it did make me feel better about myself , knowing that I was actually doing it right, even though...

BLOCK TWO

For Block One - I used two colors only, so I decided to go a little scrappier this time and just use what ever Blues with Cream that I pulled out.

Hindsight - I probably should have chosen better - the secondary pattern gets lost in the scrappy.

and maybe - if I had used three colors - I could have seen an inner pattern emerge?

BUT!! I Still like it!!

Again - I used 5 inch squares on my block

I used 8 Five Inch Cream squares  and 8 Five inch Blue squares to make my 16 Half Squares.

and Ta - Da  - Block TWO is finished!!

Back in March - maybe April - our Quilt Shop started doing some shipping and pick up shopping -


I called and said - I need some Western Fabrics - what do you have?

and they texted me photos of what they had, I chose what I wanted - and Bam!! Two days later - it arrived at my house!!

I have finally made some progress on it - and here is what is up on my Design Wall now...

It is pretty scrappy looking, even though it is a controlled Fabric scheme - but I like it.

and I wanted something fun to sew....

and NOW!! I have started a new project... you will want to come back Wednesday to see what I am up to.....

Right On Target - the Top

I am whooping it up!!!

I finished my Right On Target top... maybe I should rename it to Psychedelic.....  Its a little bright!

BUT!! I like it!!

And I have some scraps left - I am going to quilt it, and Bind it in that green that I used for the border. Then I am thinking of using the scraps to see if I can make some kinda of pillow cover or something - they are all pretty small...

and I am also happy - My Quilt Holders are home! It is Spring break for Two of them - and guess what? They will be home for a while!! As I am sure you are aware.... many colleges/universities are going online for a while.

So YAY for me - I get 24/7 access to Quilt holders... Better get things finished right?

On the other hand - my dog... who has gotten very used to it being just the two of us - is a little overwhelmed... we now have 4 permanent people in the house....

eating 3 times or more a day, and walking through the house - that DOG owns, and patrols, and keeps the bad guys out... he is barking a lot more than usual!

The oldest - he is online too - but he lives on his own - not in campus housing... so he doesn't have to come home.  ( bummer for me!)

Stitch it and Gift it!!

I love this idea for a blog hop - it kinda gets you in the spirit... and pushes you a long to finish the ideas you have.... That being said!!

If you are reading my post - you are now SWORN to SECRECY/..... Got it???

and!! Even more important - if you know any of my family.... you may not speak of this to them....

and EVEN more important.... if you know my Brother in law... do not tell him that I like him... we operate on the - who can pick on each other the worst........

Alright - then you may read on....

A few years ago I decided that it would be cool to make him a quilt with pictures of his family and some old photos.  His family is one that has been in Wyoming for a million years ( that's how old he is - bwahh haa haa)   And they have quite the history... so I worked with his Sister and Brother and we found some really great old photos.

His Dad was a WWII pilot and we found some of those photos - and we found some goofy ones -

Then I worked with Erin and Fabric on Demand  and I made fabric of those photos,... that is one awesome company - they are SO helpful and SO great to work with.

And then! I had to find fabrics - oh the torture.. oh the shopping - Ok .. not really -

Whoops - that is not it... that is just a photo of a few of my horses... that was a test - just to see if you were ready to keep a secret...

There is the top!! I framed each photo with Dark Brown cowboy fabric ... in ... of course a Churn Dash!! I thought it looked like a frame for each photo.

I thought that would be the end of my post - I didn't know if I could get it completely finished by today... but you know what?? You beg your husband to make dinner and you work in the dark... and

you get it DONE!!

( and by Done - I even mean... are you ready???? BOUND!!!)

it turned out King Size - which was sorta my plan - but not really... I was going for Queen - but you know ... Math.... It changes a lot!! Works out pretty good tho! They have a king size bed.

I am so glad that Creatin in the Sticks gave us this push to get something done in time for the holidays - and in my case - something pretty big... It took me 2 years to really make this.... We have been collecting photos that long...
