Flags for Sue QOV

Remember our Flags for Sue Block drive a few years back? I cut a lot of fabric for the Flags - and I still have a few of the blocks, so every so often... its time to put another one together.

the photos aren't the greatest - it was overcast - but!! The Top and the Quilting are done and headed to our Sew Group for Binding,.

I quilted a Meandering Star on it - I really like this Panto - its simple, and actually pretty quick!! But the Stars make it pop!!

and - the Obligatory Dog Photo. Bella ( top left) was in a mood and wouldn't turn to face the camera. her MOOD made me remember when my kid... so excited for Halloween, decided he was done. He just stopped where he was, and that was the end of his Trick or Treating.

I really like how these turn out!! And!! I may have cut some more strips...

QOV's with the DAR - aka presenting Quilts to some amazing Veterans!

Don't you just love all the acronyms in this world? It confuses me - but more on that later!

I was invited to do a presentation with a DAR ( Daughters of the American Revolution) last weekend. We awarded nine quilt - and it was awesome!!

But I joked on Saturday about accidentally calling the Scrap challenge colors, and then I went and did this presentation and I think it confirmed my Psychic abilities ( Snark snark)

I Had 5 Marines, 1 Marine/Army and 3 Army Veterans - from Vietnam to Iraq... one just returning from another Iraq deployment less that a year ago.. oh! one was a Full Bird Colonel - his dad was there to brag - I loved it!!

They were all amazing -

but Back to my abilities!!

So the guy on the far left - he had Cats on his pillowcase - and I said - I hope someone in your family likes cats - and his 7 year old daughter jumped up and said I do!!! and she was wearing cat ears on her headband... super cute!!

The guy Third from the left -

Ethel made his Quilt, She fussy cut Eagles and put them in the center of the blocks. So while I was explaining fussy cutting and this quilt to him , his eyes started leaking....  he was army - 101st airborne - aka * The Screaming Eagles*

The guy Third from the right - he was a little leery to come to the presentation. He was Vietnam and had some rough memories of coming back to the states. He wasn't sure what to expect. I told him the Story of his Quilt ( Flags for Sue) and Oh my gosh, the smile just kept getting bigger and bigger. His whole house is decorated with historical Flags....

You see how the universe is confirming my Goofy Assumptions haha!! Give me enough time and I think I can make anything all about me 🤣😂😍

Flags for Sue Quilt of Valor and.... Finished ( or not) Friday!

 Happy Friday!!

I was accused this week of being a Pollyanna... and I laughed! I haven't heard that word in a long time, as in - I think my Grandma used it and she passed on decades ago!  But yes - I will take that accusation. I know that the world is not perfect, but think of all the fun a little joys that really do happen all around you each day... It will make you happier, and a Lot less stressed!

Even when you get up to iron and see Wade the Steer heading towards the dog kennels... IN YOUR YARD.... just in case you want to know... that is NOT where he is supposed to be. But Wade thinks he is human and he wanted a little head rub... *sigh* ( Pictures at the end of the post)

And today - what makes me happy? I have finished another Flags for Sue Quilt of Valor.

QOV #19 for 2020

I used a Blue Polka Dot to sash this one - and I like it!! And a fun clamshell to quilt it with.

I love these quilts - and the most cool thing is how many of them are Hugging Veterans that were BORN OF FLAG DAY!!! Who knew that would work out so well like that! My Favorite is a WWII Veteran, born on Flag Day, he said his eyes were leaking a little when he received his .... oh my!

Ready for Wade the Steer?  I wish I could video him, but I laugh to much when he comes to see me, and he lets me pet him, and he is huge, so I am always ready to move fast!

As soon as I pulled the phone out, he got shy - but.... he really does think he is human!!

Alright - Show us your Finished ( or Not) Projects!! Let us ohh and ahh and leave you a cool comment!

Decorating for Christmas... and Finished ( or not) Friday

Does the title scare you a little?

Sorry - My family thinks you should not decorate or start listening to Christmas music until Thanksgiving is over... but this year... I am already starting ---- sort of!!

My friend found the cutest cactus Christmas tree.. and we all got to talking ....
I started thinking about maybe a Blue and Silver(white) themed Christmas...

And I don't really decorate much ( mostly because I hate putting it away)

Then I thought - what if I got all of my Blue quilts out, and started throwing them on the couches? I mean it would be like the decorations are sneaking up on us right?

Would you believe..... I have exactly ONE Blue and White quilt.... THAT IS IT!! Who knew this?

So there you go! I decorated for Christmas!!!  Ha Ha!
( and now I am pulling Blues to make more Blue quilts!)

Here is what I actually got done!  Do you remember Flags for Sue? This is one of the tops I made from those blocks - and NOW!! it is Quilted!!  Ready to be bound - which is perfect - we have awarded almost all of our Quilts of Valor, and now we need to get busy finishing more!

I believe at last count we have awarded 22 of these quilts now - so cool to Honor Sue this way - and so neat to spread it out,.... makes me think of her each time I work on one!

Its your turn!!
BRAG about your Finishes or your Not Finishes....
Please make sure you use a direct link - that way... I can go directly to the post you want to brag about!

Quilts of Valor being awarded

I LOVE to Make Quilts of Valor - but I LOVE seeing them awarded even more!!!
I LOVE the stories that come out, the smiles that emerge, and the little ( or big) hug you get for thinking of them.....

So....
Here you go:

I love how the right quilts make their way to the Right Veterans
This one below - he was beyond happy with his
He told us afterwards how they had just redecorated and this was the whole theme
( Diamonds and Patriotic)

This one was in the army and told be he bleeds army green
He quilt had Army Green as the background -
Too cool!

This one was in Vietnam and he was super quiet about his service
After Receiving his quilt he came up and told me some crazy stories
He was stationed near the DMZ

This one
Oh this one - what a sweet heart
He is a lot sicker than he looks, but he was just happy to be there.
he could not believe us quilters would make something so beautiful for him

The above photos were all one award ceremony

Below
Another group
I went to their meeting and they were Just Amazing!!
They were just so tickled to  be recognized for their service.

The one sorta Kneeling is a Marine ( on the right)
and when he learned I was a new Marine Mom - he gave me all sorts of tips!
It was cute

This group - What a group - I tell you each group has a different feel - but this one was true brotherhood - and not only Military but in  LIFE!   The 5 on the left and the one below - all went to the same high school .

They all were in different Branches of the military during Vietnam - and they all went on Honor Flight together.  Isn't that cool - and the one on the far right? He is the younger brother of one of the *group* and he served during desert Storm ...

The man on the far left was the high school quarterback - and the man next to him was the center on their HS football team, and each one of them had the best stories - they were all such Great friends
We didn't want the Ceremony to end - I loved them all.

So now... go sew
Make a QOV - I know you want to!
Ha ha!

Quilt of Valor Inspirations

Since we have the Mystery ( Lone Rider!) going on on Wednesdays - I thought I would do a Little QOV post here today! My group has been pretty prolific in creating and you all need to see the cool quilts right???

This is a Wonky Stars
We did this as a block drive in 2015
So it is fun to see people working on them again
Margaret Mary and Faith pieced it
Crystal Quilted it

NExt is a top from Laura
It is a Zig Zag Rails
We did this as a block drive in 2014
But it's timeless
I designed the block as a way to use all my 2 1/2 inch strips!

Here is a great Strippy quilt
Made by Miracles
Quilted by Beth

Beth Also quilted this one
Made by Evelyn

And this one
Made by San

Kathy made and quilted the one above
and the Flags for Sue was Kathy and her familys joint effort

you see - Sue is Kathys Sister
Even Kathys and Sues Brothers helped make this one in her Honor

Hope you enjoyed seeing these awesome quilts that will be heading off to Veterans very Very Soon!

So my youngest son just finished his Very last year as a 4H participant.

He participated in Quilting and in Shooting Sports - and he had fun. And it was weird to have this be the end of something....

after each of the other kids we knew is was over for them.... but we still had more kids..... so it wasn't over for us.  Now.... it sorta is!

This was his Quilt
And he had fun making it

And of course -
It is almost ready to be awarded

Photo Challenge : Joy: and a Flags for Sue

My photo challenge Theme this week was JOY

This is two fold for me - 1: I have such joy making these Patriotic Quilts ( they are called Quilts of Valor) and this one is a favorite of mine.

2: I was able to award the Quilt to a WWII Veteran as a thank you for his Service in the Military. The look on his face makes my heart so happy - to know that he loved the quilt, and better yet, to know that his service was appreciated.

Gina - an awesome QOV quilter... took a few sets of the Flags for Sue Quilt blocks and she worked her magic!!!

Don't you love the extra little red in the border?  This one was quilted by her friend Julie

And you all know how much I love gold!! That just makes these quilts pop!!!
Gina Quilted this one!

Thanks ladies - and all the quilters who submitted blocks!! Can't wait to award These Quilts of Valor!

WWII Quilt of Valor Recipients

Saturday Morning was awesome!!!
We had the opportunity to Honor WWII Veterans - and it was so cool!

Sadly one of them got sick the day before and didn't feel he could make it, so his will be awarded at home.

There was a gal sitting to my left when I was making the presentations and I gave her my phone. She took some great photos - and of course - my sweet husband was there helping me, so he took this top one.

Isn't he beautiful! He had such a happy smile when we wrapped his quilt over him. and.... he wouldn't sit down until I hugged him.... love it!

This young gentleman will be 96 soon. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa....

He was so cute, he talked about his service - and then he looks at the crowd ( all about 15-20 years younger than him) and says - was anyone else in the Battle of Okinawa?

A young man in the back said - no Sir - you are the only BadA$$ from that battle here today.

This one said I was sweet ....

This gentleman will be 103 on Flag day this year - Notice his Quilt? A Flags for Sue!!  I think that was perfect - when we showed him his quilt he was tickled about the Flags for a Flag Day baby!

Oh Man - and his awesome gentleman - His stories!!  I know people always call this group the Greatest Generation - I am pretty sure these gentlemen are part of the reason why!!

it was an awesome morning - and a great way to start the weekend!  I enjoyed these gentlemen so very much and was so honored to be a part of Honoring their service.

PS - this was the 18th Flags for Sue Quilt awarded so far!

Patriotic Finishes for Friday!!!

Whoot Whoot!!  TWO!! Finishes..... well as finished as I get Quilts of Valor !!  You know I always like to spread the love, so someone else will add the binding....  ;-)

One of our Flags for Sue Tops. I pieced it, and well - I sorta really liked the gold so I decided I wanted to Quilt it ...and me, having it in my possession.... did just that!!

and the next one is a top that Kevin the Quilter made for us!
He came and spoke to our guild
( and of course, stayed with me - cuz my husband said he would cook.... Kevin knew it was safe!!)

and he left this top
and then he emailed me the block
and I promptly lost the information.
BUT!!  Never fear

I also have used this block - with my 30's prints Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2015 so I can tell you what I used!

Are you ready?

A close up of the quilting

Hope you all had a great week
I was sorta shocked to find out that yesterday was Thursday, not Tuesday
..... sigh!

Flags for Sue

This has been so rewarding and puts me in a happy place every time I open an envelope -

This is the last batch of blocks that have come my way.... and just so you know - there are sets being put into tops RIGHT SMACK NOW!!!

I hope you don't get tired of our Flags - but I plan to keep you all updated as we start making, quilting and awarding these quilts.   I predict this will be a 2 year project ;-)

Check out these lovelies!

So this is 13 more Blocks - and that puts us at a total of
660 Blocks that have arrived here at my house

I have had pics sent to me of other QOV quilters making these same blocks for quilt in their area - and I think that is just so cool!!!

660 Blocks - wow - about 55  quilts!! 55 people!! As Quilting Jet Girl said - at least 1 per week!!!
WOW!!
