Aka - How a Quilt idea goes bad,.... and then maybe redeems itself!!
Maybe.
Remember Dash To Hawaii? I had a bunch of 5 inch squares left over, so I thought... lets make Scrappy Churndashes.
And then I had to make some memory quilts and I thought - lets make some Hawaiian 9 patches as leader ender blocks...
and then.... I thought - lets make them into a quilt...
I put them up on the design wall , walked a little bit away - and wondered what I had been drinking at the time.. cuz man!! I sure felt dizzy now!!!!
Of course, I had to leave that up for an hour or two... wanted to see what the dog did, and what the husband did... they fell down too!!!
Back to the Design wall... I decided to separate them out to see what I thought....
Nope still not working for me on the 9 patches.....

Oh I loved the original idea!
I like busy designs! It may require some ripping (okay, a lot of it) but the bright squares in the nine patched could work as the sashing. And that would use them up.

The churn dash blocks on their own are really lovely. I look forward to seeing where this evolves and takes you!
Oh, I do like it with the solid sashing best of all! The four patches might do well with the same thing to calm them down!
I liked the original idea, but I think the sashed churn dashes look good too! Maybe you can put the 9-patches on the back? I love the fabrics!

I like the tropical blue "water" separating the churn dashes.
The nine patches are really busy, but I like them with the churn dash blocks (top photo). It tones them down and you still get all the fabrics. Lovely colors all together.
Now I'm wondering if you used the original blocks and put the same strips in between ...? I like a churn dash out of anything at all, so that's going to be a favorite. =)
My idea would require ripping, make the centers of the nine patch a solid white or whatever your churn dash backgrounds are. But I like the way you have your churns with sashing also:)

The Churn Dash blocks with the sashing look great. It calms the busyness of the fabrics and overall quilt. Why not create HST or Hourglass blocks with the other Hawaiian Fabric blocks. You will still keep the vibrant fabric design, but just tone it down a bit. Another idea is to cut these blocks into a Disappearing 9 patch design and sash between the ''slices''.
The Churn Dash blocks with blue sashing looks good, I'm with some of the other quilters who like your busy blocks as well.
This is probably a silly idea but what if you did use the blue sashing to separate all the blocks in your original idea if you really don't want to use the bust blocks. Personally I really do like them.
Hawaiian shirts are such fun, but I agree they make for a busy quilt. I like your solution for the churn dash blocks.
