Blocks, Blocks, and more Blocks ... and Finished (or not) Friday

Today is an *or not* Friday - but man did we have a fun week!

Started with our Regular QOV sew day -

I had such fun making blocks for Cynthias Many Hands Many Hearts drive that we stole it!!! and !!

Made 94 blocks for our sew day . We need 80 per quilt, and I have 160 cut - can you believe it!!   ( ps Cynthia - the blocks I made for you will be winging out soon)

Then I was invited to be the speaker at my Home Guild - Pieceable Friends in Greeley - and before the program 10 of us got together and did a workshop.

I cut enough blocks for 4 quilts - we got all the blocks done, and even got a few rows assembled

But wait!! There is more!!

Remember my scrappy start to Popsicle Sticks?

Block components are made - and ready to assemble!!

No finishes - but lots of progress on the starts!!

a QOV top and Finished ( or not!) Friday!

Ohhh I may be slowly getting back in action!! I had a morning to start looking at my sewing area - and the piles... the piles people - enough to make me want to start sewing someplace else haha!

but!! I got this top finished - I just had to sew the blocks into the strips, and apply the out borders - sounds easy right?  Well - It was - but we had 42 interruptions by unknow objects driving by  - the dogs had to bark at each unknown sounds..... ( okay -it was the sound of ghosts - but Daisy was sure they were out there)

We had an accidental skunking - and boy howdy was that a stink

and! we actually had to get some work done ( good work!)

but Lookie here:

A TOP!!!

And while I was sorting in those piles - I found the binding strips I meant to make a while ago - they are now bindings - ready for our QOV's - and that pile is a lot smaller....

a

I am sort of afraid to keep digging - but I must - I must get to the bottom of the piles... before I Start something new.... right?/  Isn't that the LAW or something like that 😉

How did your week go?

Tell me  - How are you beating this summer heat already?

Another QOV presentation...

if you are following from  yesterday - I am now in car 2 for the next presentation....

We have been working with this VFW for years  - and of course - I just love them. Sharon is the VFW Aux President and this is her last year of being it. So we wanted to go out with a bang!!!

FIFTEEN Veterans were there with their families and it was so crowded - I LOVED it.

Sharon made the mistake of telling me I was in charge when I got there -the power went to my head haha!

This VFW has been renamed the Danny Dietz VFW and it was an honor to Wrap several Navy Seals, some that were even in the service with Danny in this Presentation.  ( click to Read about Danny Here )

I loved getting to learn the bios of these Veterans - we had those that served in:

  • Operation Joint Force
  • Operation Spartan Shield
  • One who was in charge of HIMARS operations ( I googled and they confirmed - HIMARS is High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems)
  • Navy Seal Officer
  • Vietnam
  • Grenada
  • Afghanistan
  • A Computer operator
  • Strategic command
  • Persian gulf
  • Cold war
  • one that conducted night flight operations off a carrier
  • A medic - who now is a command surgeon
  • A machine Gunner
  • an Air Force medic
  • and the president of a Seal Group'
it was pretty cool!!And they were so amazed at all the beauty of the quilts they received. and were quite stunned that someone would want to honor them this way.

QOV presentations

Friday Afternoon found us at an Assisted Living Facility to award 3 Quilts of Valor.

There are no photos, but it was very interesting to me. There are 14 veterans in this facility, and they do a therapy program (talk therapy).  I was allowed to sit in on it. I learned a few things, but mostly it was things that I have learned over the years of being in the units they have let me go in

The hardest part for me, was that we were in a closed room. I am kind of (okay really) Claustrophobic, and I struggle even with elevators. I was trying to center my mind, and the vet sitting next to me said - don't like small spaces eh?  Breathe with me. He was 85 - and we did some box breathing together and I was fine.

He was so very sweet, and was so fun to talk to.

( I have been in a lot of small spaces over the years with vets, but since 2020 not as much..*sigh* )

The Next QOV presentation was at a Breakfast!

and the latecomer ↓

This is a great group - The latecomer is not in trouble - I promise, his wife had been really sick so he was just a little late getting into the photo  but he wanted to make sure we had a photo to share.

We had a couple - she was army, he air force - so our group had 2 o the same quilts made - and I thought it would be cute to award them to them... that way they couldn't fight over whose was better. ( which I know they wouldn't - but it made everyone laugh)

I have so much fun doing these, and especially when I have gotten the chance to know the veterans personally... I might tease them a bit!!

After Breakfast, I headed back home to switch vehicles - and head to the next presentation.

(I stole my sons car so I could load all the quilts into two vehicles and not get confused!!)

The last April QOV presentation

.. and we decided to do it outside. We have not seen rain very much at all this year, and you know what?

I think we tempted fate - because it drizzled the WHOLE presentation, and then - when we got ready to leave ... it stopped ...

I had hoped to pull the rain to my house! ( this presentation was 45-50 miles away)

There is a Gorgeous Veterans Plaza in this town - and it was a perfect backdrop to the presentation.

I had bios of each Veteran and it was so cool to learn about each one. But what is always more fun to me, is to see their faces when the Quilts are shown. I am always so amazed at how each quilt finds just the right Veterans for them.

I enjoyed meeting these Vets, and was so impressed that none of them looked like the drowned rat that I looked like in that drizzle... just a funny... my hair actually went flat instead of frizzy - so that was a positive!

To find out more about Quilts of Valor or to Nominate a Veteran - go to QOVF.org and look around. I hear we are almost to our 500,000 quilt. That!! is amazing!!!

A whirlwind of a QOV weekend

One of us Booked Back to back to back QOV presentations.

One of us should have looked at the calendar better

But !! A lot of us had a great time, met Amazing Veterans - and!! made a lot of Adults cry....

It Started on Friday Night. We headed to the local VFW. We have partnered with this VFW for 23 years - they were the first people to help us out with our QOV project. When I was teaching the kids, this VFW donated funds for fabric - We love them. So its always nice to go *home* with them.

it was a fun group - and they served Smashburgers!!
We had (from L-R)
Navy
Army and AF ( she enlisted twice!)
Marine
and
Navy

Saturday Morning found us at one of our Favorite groups - in Front of 188 Veterans these 6 received their Quilts of Valor.

One of the Veterans was moving, so we were trying so hard to get his Quilt to him before he moved, so it was a little emotional - not only from the moving, but from receiving his quilt. He told us that his was the MOST beautiful of them all!

So we had Army, Navy, Army, Army, Navy Navy - it was a lot of fun. My Husband wasn't able to come help me, so My friend Brian ( a Marine and Navy Vet) Came with me to help present - and he had a blast.

Saturday afternoon found me awarding a Quilt privately as they had medical issues and it was easier for me to go there. I loved this couple. They were SO very sweet - and so very excited that we would come to them.!

Now!! On to Sunday!!

It was QOV sew day and !! Presentation day!

We were also honored to have Veterans Life Magazine attend . it was pretty cool to have them around and watching what we were doing.

This was a fun group - One of the Veterans second military assignment (after being in Armor) was to be a Military Family Attaché. He escorted the remains of the deceased to their home states. He said it was a very significant assignment. And such a great one to speak with.

So we had Marine, Army, Navy, Army and Army  - Such amazing folks.

We also completed a Quilt top, Bound a few, made a lot of blocks and!! Made some pillowcases.

Just so you know - I am tired. I have one more presentation this week, and then I take some time off.

See you Friday for *Finished (or not) Friday!! **

Star and Crown Progress

This is one we started at one of our QOVV Sew days - it is Star and Crown by Pat Speth.

I have the inner part of the quilt done, now I need to come up with an idea for the border. Well!! I have an idea, I just don't know if I like it or not -so! We stalled out here:

i think it needs something to stop the Busy, but then I think it needs some busy back in the border - just not too much. Anyways - I got it to here, it goes back into the box until I figure it out... Its not as if I don't have other projects to play with ..... right??

We had a little snow... and I mean little, but just enough to get the girls all dirty. And they had to get baths, But when the mud dried - they wanted to show you how pretty they are....

Today I am going to link up  with

Thanks for those of you who stopped by to see what I had for sale... I think I may have more on Saturday. For some reason I am in a mood to use it or send it into the world to be used.

I'm wrapping them ...

our QOV group was able to wrap a few more Veterans!! 6 this time .

I love being able to do this, even though I know that there is some emotion involved - it still lifts my heart each time I see a smile or a tear as the Vet allows us to wrap them up.

The Veteran second from the left hid in the back photos!! he had a Jelly Roll Plus quilt too. Its fun to know that we did these as the Jelly Roll Sew day and they are so quickly out in the world!

Saturday found us trekking to a town the I had not been to!!!

The local DAR ( Daughters of the American Revolution) had four Veterans they wanted to honor and wrap with a Quilt of Valor - and wowzers!! they went full out - it was a beautiful room, decorated to the nines, and!! they had a lunch prepared to feed 1000 haha!

We had two Vietnam Veterans - one Desert Storm and One Iraq - they were all fabulous folks, and we so loved chit chatting with them over lunch.

The next day was our Sew Day!!

Look what got made:

The WINTER 2026 QOV QAL!!! This one wa pieced by Ms Jeri

State Coordinator QOV's and !! Finished ( or not) Friday!

Happy Friday!!

Remember the QOV's my group was making for the SC? Well!! they are quilted, and will be heading to the next person to get the binding on - so yay!! We should be able to get these to her in April for all her awards!! Whoot Whoot!!

Are you ready?

I used a different panto on each one of them - so there were a few difference - Two of them have red centered blocks... and one of them the borders go on the opposite sides.... they needed som differentian right???

I am excited to have these done, I fit them in , in between client quilts - so it always feels like a big check mark has been made on my to -do list  when they are all done!!

I always tell myself that I do not have UFO's - but - I needed to pick up after my dogs and their tail wags hit a stack of blocks in my sewing area.

Guess what?

I had a UFO ( or 2)

and I had some PIGS ( or 2)

and I had some strings... I am now all sorted, and I got all the UFO's in the appropriate bucket so I can whittle them down.

I just need some Whittling time now ha!!!

I am glad the Dogs tail wagged, but I am sad that it wagged, it proved to me that I am not as organized as I think I am,.,. Oh boy!!  I also changed out a quilt or tow - hoping to cause a rain ( or snow) - it didn't work....

Now it is all up to you!! What did you get finished this week? What did you get worked on?

And even MORE Quilts of Valor

We also had a group sew day with my Local QOV group. I think you could say I was dreaming in Red White and Blue.....

Our State Coordinator (I retired from that position 3 years ago now - that went fast!) Is going to do some special presentations with this QOV panel that was made for our 250th year ( as a country! not QOV)

Each group got one of the panels, and she asked if we would consider making the QOV for her presentations. We said sure - and promptly were sent two more panels... so GO US!! we have made three.

I am working on getting these Top Three Quilted before our next sew day so I can bribe Someone to add the binding - and then we will get them off to our SC

We also got the frame for one more done, Connie made all of these blocks, and Denise put the frame together.

I have a lot of panels - so will add the panel and borders - and Bam!!

Another one will be made !

Also - Friday - WE FINALLY GOT SNOW!! Isn't it so pretty!!!

Bella girl had a blast - and she chased the others and they got soaked, and dirty, and muddy!!
And there were NO complaints from us!

We also needed a snow man

Its back to 60deg today - but!! There was SNOW!!
