Crumby Rail Fence Finish and !! Finished ( or not) Friday

About a year ago - I had some leftover blocks from one of Cynthia's Block drives for her Hospice Quilts.... and they just had to be used!!!

I have been trying to adopt a "If you pull the fabric, You must use the fabric" Policy around here. Eh - I am 80/20 in the positive... so its sort of working!

Instead of putting those leftover crumby blocks into a scrap pile I built a quilt!

and now... that quilt got some quilting - and! Is bound!!

I decided that each Square ( Round) of colors needed it own Quilting design - and then I played!

I did make a few boo boos along the way - and get a measurement or two wrong - but you know what? I had fun and I like how it looks!!! Oh - and it is a finish - so there is that going for me haha!!

I actually had a really good time quilting this and imagining that it would look like what I saw in my head ...

So how has your week been? Any progress or Finishes to report???

Crumby Rail Fence in the round ( ish)

Once upon a time - Cynthia over at Quilting is more fun that Housework said - I could use some rail fence blocks for the compassion quilts that I am making for my local Hospital.. and I said - Hey I can (kinda) stitch straight lines!!!

So I pulled out the Blues and Tans ( and oops a little bit of teal) that she asked for and spent an enjoyable morning stitching blocks for her.  I picked the best - mailed them off, and then looked at my sewing table

Boy did I have a LOT of scraps left, and boy did I make a MESS!!!

Then life happened, I piled those scraps on the lid of a bucket ( filled with other scraps) and went on.

Spring Cleaning hit!!! and I pulled those scraps back out again, and went to work.

I put everything into 5 1/2 inch squares - and Oh! My ! Stars!!! there were a lot!!

I started throwing them up on the design wall and a plan came to me!

And I  kept working  - and hey!! How many of you get Hulu?  Brothers and Sisters is on there. I watched a few episodes years ago when it was on TV... but... kids..... Too many events haha!

So on came another episode and then:

But!!! I still had more color blocks,.... and so... I started another round... ish!!

When my husband came up for lunch ( he works in the basement a few days a week) He Said!!

Oh heck fire - I like that!!! and so... I stopped

( okay - I also only have 2 blocks left)

Who knew that I could make a whole nother quilt out of the leftovers??

Tip #1 - Make sure your rotary Blades are sharp... Get them here

Tip #2 - Watch a fun show... you won't want to leave until you run out of blocks!!

Now!!! Just to make you aware Cynthia is running another little Block drive - and!!! it is CHURN DASHES... oh you know I have to make at least one.....

I think I have until May to get a few to her!

PS - don't forget - Friday ( here!!) is Finished (or not) Friday!! Come Link up!

Scrappy Rail Fence Pattern for Jan 30th Sew day

On January 30th - in the big town of Greeley I will be hosting a Quilt of Valor sew day. A few of you have asked what we will be sewing, and can you join in virtually - and the answer is OF COURSE!!

Now let me show you what we will be sewing. I have 3 of these kits already made up, so I think I  might be prepared.

Tada ; The Scrappy Rail Fence!

I used my Accuquilt Go Cutter and a bunch of scraps and started cutting. And then I measured. I think that might be backwards -  but it has worked so far!!

To make a scrappy version you need

48  2 inch by 42 inch Dark Strips
32  2 inch by 42 inch Light Strips.

You will then sew them into 16 strip sets - Dark Light Dark Light Dark

I pressed them all to one side, because that is the way I roll.

Then I sub cut each strip set into 8 inch blocks.  From this I got 80 blocks total.

Set the blocks, alternating directions in an 8 x 10 setting

Sew
And Voila - a scrappy rail fence!!

Now - if you want to do yardage and make a more color controlled quilt, you will need
1 yard each of 3 darks and 2 lights - for a total of 5 yards. ( make sense?)

Oh - and the finished size should be :

60 x 75 inches -

which is perfect - because QOV is now asking that quilts be a minimum of 55 x 65 in. So this will totally fit the bill......

Hope you like it - let me know if you have questions, or I need to be more clear.
