Shirts???? and...... Finished (or not) Friday!!!!

 Happy Friday!!

It almost seems like another life ago -  but I used to be a clothing manufacturer.... and then I got into Quilting and I think I forgot all about garment making... until now  haha!!

I started a Maternity Clothing company in 1995 and was the first online clothing company that actually took orders... it was an awesome time. I think its hard to be a *first* anymore....

Anyways - I had 10 employees - we sewed a lot, and then one day quilting entered my world - and I just put those patterns away.... until!!! My son said - Mom - I found this cool fabric and I want a shirt out of it - and I panicked ....

What is a Mom to do? TEST the pattern again!!! You know just to make sure you still have those skills. And then you make the boy go hiking with you before university starts.... so are you ready??

Ta-da!!! I found a funny Pepsi Print in my Fabric Stash to test my Sewing abilities - and!! There are a few adjustments to make for the 6'8" kid - but I guessed pretty good I think!

I love having a son who is willing to goof off with me!! -
So now that we have that shirt back in our sewing skills - he asked me to try a different style - before I cut into his *good * fabric.... just have to add the buttonholes to it - and I will make him do another photo shoot!!

*photos from the hike to follow in another post *

*************** and now!!! It is your turn - link up those Finishes and let us know what you got finished this week!!!

It's been so long since I've sewn garments. I used to sew all my own clothing except jeans! Happy stitching!

Oh, how interesting that you were a trailblazer! And how fun that son would want you to make a shirt. Good thing you haven't lost the touch! Oh, and doesn't he make a handsome model! ;-)

I used to make all of our family's clothes back in the day. Never could find cute maternity clothes off the rack unless you liked tents. Made hubby's shirts too. I don't remember many fun fabrics back then either. I found some cotton Mickey Mouse fabric that was probably meant for curtains but it was lightweight. Anyway, made hubby shirt with that and it was his favorite of all!

That’s so fun! I don’t sew clothes at all. When did your boys get so big? I guess I’ve been reading your blog for a long time. 😊

Love the goofy fashion shoot photos, too fun! I used to make clothing, that's how I learned to sew. Now I'm not sure I could do a button hole again or heck even sew a 5/8" seam any more. The shirt looks really fun. My Guy loves batiks and Hawaiian shirts, so there's been a few hints he'd like me to make him a few. I'm not there yet, but Maybe for his birthday, next year!

That bad boy (shirt) looks so good on the big boy (son) so obviously you remember what to do!! He does look just like a big goofball. Can't wait to see the 'good' fabric shirt that you've been practicing for.

What a riot!!!! I thought my sons were tall at 6'7" and 6'6" but being so tall does add some challenges to a pattern! You never lose your sewing skills--it's like riding a bike! lol
Fantastic!

And we learn something new about you! If the stores don't get some good clothes in soon I am going to have to make some! Wish I had a cover stitch machine.

He is just the cutest thing ever! And aren't you lucky that he has his mom's sense of humor. LOL

Oh, and love the shirt.

Great model and interesting fabric for the shirt. I remember sewing for my sons until middle school. Now I mostly sew for GDs.

He is clearly having a lot of fun with you; how awesome! I look forward to seeing the fabric he wanted. And wow, the first online maternity company. What an amazing arc you've had!

What a great shirt! It's funny... I just bought a pattern to make myself a shirt. Haven't made any garments in years, so I, too, will test the pattern. Hopefully it will come back to me quickly.

That looks like a really fun shirt! I hope he continues to wear it even after you have made the official shirt.

So cool. I also started with garment. But as you I ended in quilts, and here I am. Just now I'm trying to use old clothes to make new quilts.

Love when the son will indulge mom and play! Great looking shirt and fun to hear about your former life!

6'8" OMG. He must have a horrible time finding clothes that fit him. Funny how several folks are trying garment sewing these days. I'm not sure I'd try a shirt but I did do a really easy dress for my granddaughter last week. Love the goofy modeling going on here. He's really cute as is the shirt.

Little Bit is such a piece of work!! He looks like he matured in the last year, but he is still quite the character, Alycia. Can't wait to see the fabric he picked out!

That was such a fun thing to learn about you! I make most of my clothing. I can't imagine making clothing all day every day, but there was a time in my life when that would have been a dream job. Glad you worked your way into quilting because you inspire so many! And what a fun project for your son!

I echo all the others -- 30 years ago I made most of my own clothing. I made new pajamas about a year ago and had to read, and re-read the instructions to be sure I was attaching the collar + facing correctly. Your son't shirt looks great! (And so does your son. :))

That is a great shirt - and your model is pretty handsome, and tall. Most of us probably started with making garments, and then abandoned them when we fell in love with quilting. I bought a fun fabric last summer with vintage cars that I originally thought would make a great Hawaiian type shirt for my husband, but made a pillowcase instead. LOL

The shirt looks fabulous. That fabric is very retro and looks wonderful. It has been a while since I have sewn clothing, too.

He is such a doll and that's a great shirt! I haven't sewn clothes, other than an apron or two, for years and years. I really need to try that again.

Loved the shirt! I'm a garment sewist too, and I've been getting myself back into it. But nothing as nice as that shirt so far. What fun photos too!

Nice shirt. I never learned how to sew clothing. My oldest son made himself a Star Wars dress shirt. He's now claimed several of my Kenmore sewing machines.
