Log Cabin Challenges

Last week I told you about our Log Cabin Challenge at our guild. The cool part was I got to quilt a few of the quilts in the challenge.

So I thought I would Show you a few of them.  Now mind you - in all of my thinking and postulating about why I didn't care for mine so much, comes this theory.  I loved everyone else's and wish I had made that!!!  Too funny!

Isn't this one cool? With all the batiks and them running up and down?  I quilted feathers all over it in lines. It turned out pretty neat! And it softened the effect of the zig zag. Perfect for one of her Granddaughters!

Then there was this Wonky Log Cabin. This client pieced it SO beautifully!! She said it was out of her color and style range, but wanted to challenge herself - and I believe she rose to the challenge!

This client did another amazing job!  She wanted a 3d Circly effect.  I had fun drawing up images to see what would look the best.

And of course - the back.

Those are my three finishes to show off this week. I didn't piece a one of them - but I sure enjoyed quilting them! And I was glad they liked them too!

Antique-ish quilts

I have a friend who does Estate Sales, She and her business partner are just amazing. They go in and clean up these estates and get everything sold and ready for the families - it is quite impressive.

Every once in a while she rescues a forgotten quilt top and works some magic on it. Sometimes she finds blocks - sometimes partial tops.... sometimes doozies - but she turns them into snuggles of love.

The latest one was so adorable. It is ALL hand pieced, scissor cut squares , We think it was from remnants of her children's clothing. They are all juvenile fabrics.

Upon inspection, we knew it was going to have some stretch - the fabrics were a combination of cottons, flannels, and a few little stretchy ones in there.

Before any of you ugh ( grin) remember - we were not finishing it for show - we were finishing it for the cuddles and the history.

And Ta da - I worked a lot of lines, a lot of squiggles, and ... got it to lay relatively flat with relatively square edges ;-)   The orange squares were left flopping ( or flapping) and my client thought she would straighten that line so it is easy to bind !

Ta da!!

Batik Quilts

Lately my clients have been bringing me a LOT of Batik Quilts! And they are just lovely.

This one was so pretty. We chose a modern-ish all over design to quilt on it - and She LOVED the final results.

 I have heard of quilters having trouble quilting with batik fronts and backs - but so far ( knock on wood) I have not had any troubles. I am just loving the way these fabrics feel

Kokopelli

My client brought me a gorgeous Batik quilt. She wanted Kokopelli's on it!

It was such fun! Here is a detail shot - just because I think it is cool!!

Antique Quilts

A friend of mine finds these beautiful Antique Blocks and Tops at a variety of sales. They are really fun to study and to just look at the fabrics.

The challenge is the repairing and the quilting. Sometimes she thinks she should hand quilt them all, and then she realizes that with the number she has.... she will never travel again if she sits down to hand quilt.

She chose this one to be machine quilted.  We decided that we really want simple quilting, that wouldn't take away from the "antique-ness" of it, but would really keep all the seams together. She fixed all the seams on the 9 patches so there weren't any holes..

 You might notice some of the 9 patches are wonky - but that is what makes it that much more loveable!!

Whirly-Gigs

This is such a cute quilt! Bright colors and whirly-gigs!!

Isn't that so cute? It made such a great little quilt!

Pastels

This Client quilt was just so simple... and I find that the most simple designs can take on a real elegance about them. She said please use feathers on it.... and so... I did ;-)

Please note - I did not trim it. So the edges are the batting.

Isn't it just elegant?

And the back - it is a yummy snuggly flannel - You can't see the feathers too much, but won't it be great for snuggling?

Solid Colors

This is another client quilt. She chose a range of solids - and WOW - did this quilt turn out fabulous!!

There is a new pattern design ( or a design element) with in it, but by the time she saw it.... she loved it as it was.  And I am with her!

The swirly quilting really added texture to it. It was a great choice that she made!

A New Quilter

A friend of mine finally jumped in and had the Quilt Bug bite her. She designed her quilt and had such a great time making it. I was honored when she asked me to quilt it!

Her plan was to hang it on the wall, so we had fun choosing a quilting Design.

Didn't she do a fabulous job?   I sure enjoyed working on it. And good news... Binding was no problem for her ;-)

Kansas State Quilt

My Dear Sandy made this really cool baby quilt... and She let me quilt it. She said something about making it more modern.... so I had a great time playing with it!

Isn't that a cute quilt? She appliqued all those little Wildcats on there...

Isn't that a fun quilt? The little baby will love it, and of course his parents - big K State fans... will love it.

Your shot of the day:   This is one of my nephews, but the thing I love the most... that guy in the bottom right corner.. that's my Brother in law... such a family event ;-)

Some finishes

I am sort of proud of myself this week - we had three major things happen ( two were NOT planned) and I still got back to my quilting. Usually I just give up and say... Tomorrow...

So here is to some persistance.

Thing #1 - our Water heater went out.... I went downstairs to get something and I heard a hissing. I was a little scared at first - usually hissing is a snake.. BUT not in the house. So I checked the utility room and one of the water heaters was leaking.  We are on a cistern/well and can run it dry really quickly - so I called my amazing plumber. He had me shut it down until he could come.  We are now running on one water heater. Yes - I did get a cold shower. Tomorrow - i will be up FIRST!!

Thing #2- my colicky horse ( Tuesdays post) . Even after all that worrying - I got back to quilting ... yay me!

So... Here is my first finish.

It is made with the Scrappy Trips Blocks. Dear Connie pieced it and I quilted it.

I have a new panto - is has musical notes on it - so I tried it on this quilt.

I like it ;-)  And it will be great for T shirt quilts too - the musical ones.

And then I worked on a customer quilt.  Isn't this fun?  Of course it is the back , I like the texture that is has.

It may not seem like a lot - but I am claiming victory this week ;-)  Hope you all had a great week, and will have an even better weekend!

Geometric Designs

My Client recently pieced this quilt for her son, and brought it to me to quilt.

We all just fell in love with it - you could just see designs every where!!

I already shared it on my Facebook Page - Quiltygirl.com -  but I thought I would share more photos here:

It was so graphic - I just loved it!!  From every angle!

A close up ! This was such a busy quilt we decided that a meander would be just a perfect fit for it .

It is always fun coming up with quilting designs and letting the customer choose what they like the best.

Half Rectangle Quilt

My Client brought me this beautiful blue and cream half rectangle quilt to quilt.  I had such a great time with it!  I do believe that it grew overnight though. I don't think I realized it was as big as it was, until I could never reach the bottom border... it became quite comical to roll it again... and STILL not see the last border!

The variety of blues was just wonderful. She did such a great job of laying them out!

And of course - you always want to see the back!!  Well - okay - I always do. I love texture on quilts and I think this is the best way to see it!

It was so fun to deliver this quilt as well. Both my client and her husband were just so tickled. That REALLY makes a persons' day!
