Bee Keeping and Scrappy Stars

Our county offered and *Introduction to Bee Keeping for Kids* and I immediately emailed and asked if older kids could come (like me!!) And they said yes - just to know that there would be kids there.

I am okay with kids - most of them like me ... sort of...  I speak their language haha

It was a great day!

They showed us all the gear and explained how the Bee houses work. She showed how they harvest the honey. And talked about our weather concerns - Cold and high winds- and explained the Queen Bees.

It was pretty cool - after that she showed us how to make candles with the bees wax. She makes a lot of other things as well.

And the kids seemed to be okay with a few extra adults around. 😉

I thought the class would go all day, and it was only about 1/2 day.....

You know what that meant right?  I could finished my Scrappy Stars!!!  I mean, I had already scheduled the time off.... yay!!

Got it all finished and took the pups to go take the photos... Remember those winds I talked about during the Bee Class... they showed up!

I was having quite the hard time holding the quilt still....

Finally it slowed for a moment - and the girls showed up to pose!!

The other nice thing? My son came home and he cooked - Lasagna... I think I will keep him!

Do any of you keep bees?  We were told the best time to get them and get started is Spring - so I have some time to research, but I know where I want them:  In the trees, and then I want to plant more flowers around where I will put them.  But I would love to learn more!

I've always been kind of fascinated by bee-keeping. I never tried it - afraid of all the bee stings. ;-) But I do love local honey! Your scrappy stars is beautiful! Just in time for Veteran's day. Blessings!

Oh wow that is exciting! So you will keep them "under" the trees or "in" the trees? And did she say they will stay through the cold and wind? Hope you will keep us posted. Your scrappy starts turned out great - and you got 2 great photos!

Oh, beekeeping is a passion for many! We have had bees, if you get a nice calm queen (they breed for this) and you yourself are calm when working around them, they are easy (ish). The bad--full boxes are 50-60 lbs, bees will decide they dont like you and leave (swarm), randomly they will die over the winter. Sometimes you can foster a hive from a local, they set it up and empty it, you watch it and get a couple of jars of honey in return, if you dont want to go all in.
We are zone 5, flowers they like here are snowdrops, apple trees, echinancea, bee balm, thistle, and many herbs. There are some great youtube channels.

We never kept bees ourselves, but a small honey production company in our community put hives out on one of our pastures. They paid us with a gallon of fresh honey each year. In late fall the company trucked the hives to Oklahoma for the winter, and brought them back in spring. I'm not sure if that is still what they do or not. Kids at school would tour their production facility for field trips.

My granddad was a bee keeper. You're right about it being interesting! What an awesome flimsy!

I haven't had bees myself, but my husband and his family did when he was younger. I think you will enjoy learning more about them and having them around! Your Scrappy Stars quilt top is beautiful, and hooray for home cooked lasagna that you didn't have to make. :)

What an interesting class to take! We are fascinated by the science of beehives here, too. Your star flimsy is beautiful!

Bee keeping could be fun. We had neighbors where I was growing up that kept bees. Scrappy Stars turned out beautifully. It has been pretty winderful here too. I guess it's just that time of year.

Scrappy Stars is very scrappy and happy! With that sunset in the background, it's even more beautiful. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Fantastic finish for your starry top! Love the photo of the sun shining through! The bee keeping has always interested me but it is a lot of work---a good friend has three hives and I buy her honey!

Those gals are just too cute! I don't keep bees, appreciate all they do, but prefer to not get stung!

The girls are such great models for your quilts! So, are you going to start beekeeping now? You sure have the space!
