It's weaning time ...Time for the Babies to leave the Mommas alone.... and man are they vocal about it!!!
Meet!! The Crooners!
Toby is still rather shy, but when he bellows.... you all know it!!
And Reba... the red head... I figure if Johnny Cash could sing about a Boy Named Sue - I could have Steer named Reba!! But Reba fits right? The Beautiful Red head??
K's garden has been going nuts, Tomato's, Zucchini, Cucumbers, Butternut Squash, Grapes, more Tomatoes, Onions, carrots, beets, and I am sure I am forgetting something. The Apple Trees are Producing - I am canning and preserving - and! I ran out of jars!!
Have you watched *Back to the Frontier* I believe it is on HBO/Max streaming - but it is three families who go back in time to the 1880's and try to homestead. They are learning how much food they need in their pantries to make it thru the winter.
And!! Did you know that Pressure Canners weren't invented until the 1900's ( I googled) so they have to brine and prep foods other ways. AND!! They don't have refrigerators/Freezers... you all...
1. You noticed I googled
2. NO Freezers?
I am not sure I would have survived... but then I looked at my pantry and what I have canned so far - some weeks might be have very few choices of what to eat. Did they have Pizza Delivery??
( well we don't have that either - too far away from town, but! I can at least pick one up if need be)
I am still happy with the fact that I am keeping up with his garden, Canning, Freezing, and more Canning ;-)

Love “The Crooners”! Your garden is beautiful!
Those steers are so cute, all looking at the camera. :D Wow what a garden! Does K have a path through the veggies? I'm amazed at all you get done as well as quilting.
Beautiful garden. I'm glad it has done so well for you to preserve. Mine was not great this summer. Too many bugs plus too dry and hot.
The Crooners are great. I remember the noise after we weaned the calves. LOL The house I grew up in was over 100 years old and had a dirt root cellar under it. My folks always had a huge garden, and the shelves in that root cellar would be a riot of color this time of year - once mom got all of that produce canned. Goodies from the garden, plus canned chicken and beef.
The upside is that in the 1800s they didn't know about pressure cookers so preserving methods was normal. Party pooper aren't I?? I love eating what I grow and I appreciate the local farmers who produce what I don't. No chemicals-good eats!
Happy Wednesday :-)
So many abundant blessings! The Crooners are a good looking crew; the names fit perfectly.
You didn't have leftovers like we do now. You ate what you collected that day so you worked all the time keeping food at the ready. I don't know how they accomplished all that they did! I'm with you regarding refrigerators and pressure cookers. I'd add vacuum cleaners, washing machines and indoor plumbing as must have. . .of course, electricity was a big deal too!
Love your gang of 4, I bet they can sing when they want something. I never learned to can, Grad Girl wants to learn at some point. Maybe she'll teach me then.
Love your Crooners and their names! K's garden looks amazing. You'll have plenty of good stuff for the winter, I think!
Look at those handsome fellas. Good for you keeping up with the canning; it's so much work.
Hm, do those crooners sing in the middle of the night? Daytime wouldn't bother me too much but during my sleeping? I would not be a happy camper. I used to can but mostly rely on the freezer for food storage. And, you can bet on the fact it isn't something I made first. Well, except maybe cookies and muffins.
And it is a hard time for the 'babies'. When I was first married, we had a dairy farm next door and it was a sad and noisy time when weaning happened!
Do the calves sing if no one is around? Can they see momma? Are they hungry do you think or just miss momma? I love the name Reba, very appropriate. I finally met someone who was willing to share some of their apples and pears. Unfortunately, I still don't have a working stove so no applesauce making this year. Oh well. I know your family will enjoy yours! It looks delicious.
I used to can a blend of veggies starting with tomatoes. This was used as stew or soup base. It's a good way to use up a variety. I never added potatoes, but sometimes thyme or basil if they were available.
I am always impressed at people who do all that. I never gardened much - lived in the city and away a part of the summer - and my mother didn't either. It all looks so good. And yes, you can name your red headed steer whatever you want!
