Remember the flooding?

We see the damage all around us, every time we drive over the bridge, see our friends in a trailer, or travel by the river.... but we hadn't made it up the Big Thompson canyon yet. The road has been repaired, but the houses - oh my...

One of our most favorite places to snowshoe is Rocky Mountain National Park - so I let Wrangler Man drive and I took some photos.

It is really crazy to figure out how the river actually went - some houses are completely washed out, so look just fine - yet are marked with a red X. So obviously, they are not fine - but the damage must be on the inside?

Buildings have just fallen - and the bridge to get over to them is gone...

This one floored me - the furniture is still there - yet the bottom as fallen out.  Click on the one below - it's crazy!  ( ignore the hand)

There is a lot of work to be done up the canyon. There were lots of people sorting through debris. Pick up starts next week, so I am sure that will change the look as well. Crazy!

  2. In 1985 when I had a newborn and a three year old there was a devastating flood where I was living in West Virginia. The entire town was evacuated in the middle of the night including the shelter right across the street from our house. Our house didn't receive water but utilities were out for weeks(remember...newborn baby), the only medical clinic was destroyed and we had only one road left to get in and out of town. Water was trucked into our little town from a fire station 70miles away. It was a scary time and recovery literally took years.

  3. So much devastation. It will take the area a long time to recover.

Heartbreaking to see such treasured homes destroyed. Hope and best wishes to the residents!

  5. About 25 years ago there was such a flood along the American River in CA... Your pictures look almost exactly like the devastation here. I can't remember if the fire was before the flood or after, but yes, they suffered both. Some rebuilt, but not in the same spaces, and one got flooded out again... still too close to the edge.
    I hope they recover quickly.
    Hugs
