King Sized Quilts

Talk to me Goose.... How big does a King size quilt REALLY need to be?

Serape Weave Made and Quilted by me - just cuz you need a nice photo ;-)

I have been quilting some amazing King Sized Quilts for Clients recently ( seriously - it has been a run on King Sized - I think I am on my 18th one this year!! LOVE it!)    - but they all range in size -

  •  96 x 100
  • 100 x 100
  • 115 x 115
  • 120 x 120
  • 100 x 120
When I ask google the size of a King Mattress I get 76 x 80 and so I measured my bed - because!!! I got a King sized bed last year, and now it needs its own quilt.... mine is 76 x 80 in

Do I really need a 100 x 100 sized quilt for it? If you have one that is that big - how do you like it on your King? Does it fall to the floor?

I am kind of thinking 86 x 90 would be a good size - but then - am I right??

Talk to me Goose!!! Explain to me!!

  1. Oooooo, what a GREAT question! I'm on it!
We have a California King, and oodles of larger quilts dabbled around the house. I know I made a large quilt at one time for my mom's king bed, and it simply was too large -- I mean, it kept sliding off and was more frustration that anything.

    On a mission for you!

  2. We have a king sized bed. I like the quilt to come below the sideboards but not drag on the floor. I always make my king sized quilts rectangular then put them on sideways. No pillow tuck for me! The basket weave quilt is beautiful!

  3. I make my queen size 100 by 100 so that they cover the mattress AND you don’t have to worry about which way is up! Maybe measure from bottom edge to bottom edge? Good luck. Thank you for your posts.

  4. Bum knee or not, I hobbled around to gather the information you've requested. LOL. We have a tempurpedic mattress (77x82) and our bed sits a little higher (30" from the floor to the top of the mattress). I turn the quilt down probably about 18" when I make it and don't do a pillow tuck. I also like the quilt to fall to the sideboards (about 13"). The quilt that fits the best is 114x114 before quilting, but once it was quilted and washed multiple times, it is 105 x 105.
I recently washed it and threw another quilt on that was 100x100 when pieced (after quilting and washing it's 95x95 and doesn't quite cover to the sideboards.
I've also got a HUGE western quilt (123x135 pieced). I love it, but it's just a little too big although that doesn't stop me from using it!
    Hope that helps!

  5. In my opinion it depends on how deep the mattress is and how much over hang do you wish to have. I have a deep queen size mattress. My bed is high off the floor - my husband tends to grab the quilt in the middle of the night. I rarely ever make a quilt smaller than 100 x 100 for it. Sometimes more like 106x110 because of shrinkage after quilting/washing/drying. I like the mattress completely covered with overhang

  6. I'll be coming back to this post to get everyone's input, too!!

  7. My bed is queen size (60 w x 80 l) and I like a 96-98" square quilt. It gives me a nice drop on the sides and the bottom, just covers the bed frame, and the bottom corners don't quite touch the floor. How much drop and coverage do you want?

  8. Because in the winter I use an extra blanket under the quilt that serves a my “bedspread “, I haven’t made on that is perfect. There is always something peeking out! 🤨 I hope you find the answer you need! I’ll go measure my quilt and report back!

  9. Most new mattresses are 11-12" thick so you need a drop on each side to cover that and maybe to cover the box spring too unless you have a dust ruffle. I think 100 x 100 is minimum for a king.

  10. I don't like skimpy on my king sized quilts--I make them rectangles and put them on the bed sideways, too. I like it to hang over the sides by 18" min on the sides and the foot of the bed, the top covers the mattress but I do not tuck it over my pillows. So mine is 102" from foot to head and 110" from side to side.

  11. Wanda is correct, some of the newer mattresses are very deep on the sides. Do you want it to cover your pillows? How much do you want to tuck in the end? How long do you want it to hang on the sides? And last, but not least, what kind of batting are you using and how much will it shrink?

When customers come in looking for sheets, the package will tell you how deep of a mattress they will cover.

For my queen size bed, I like my quilts to be 100 x 110. Then there's plenty of room for tucking and I'm not pulling on the fabric and possibly making stitches break.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your thoughts on this. It's an excellent question.

  12. I don't know about a king size quilt but I make my queen size quilts 95" square but I like my quilts to hang over the edge several inches. I don't use bedspreads so I want the quilt to cover the side of the mattress. I think it depends on how you use the quilt.

  13. It depends on the height of the mattress, how far off the floor you want the quilt to fall along the side, pillow tuck or not, is a foot board involved or not. . .so many questions! The guest bed is a King. It has a 120 x 120 size quilt on it. I feel it is too big. It has a foot board so tucking the end of the quilt under the mattress is a challenge. It hangs too long over the sides. If I were making it again, I'd try a 110 x 115. 100 inches would be little too short for tucking it in. What a great question!

  14. I prefer to have bed quilts that cover the sides and foot of the mattress. I don't need a pillow tuck--the pillows can go on top. I would rather use a dust ruffle than have a quilt go to the floor.

  15. So, I think the drop depends on your mattress/bed height. I would measure where you want the quilt to fall and add that to the top and bottom and sides. Now also included is a pillow tuck - I put ours under so I don't need that.

And I would add 5-10% for shrinkage depending on what you do: prewash or not, batting all cotton or not, and how dense is your quilting.

Hope that helps you determine your quilt size!

  16. I have a note in my phone that I need a comforter (commercially made) to be 107" wide and 90" long to cover the mattress. That does not include a pillow tuck and I do not have a bedspring since our bed frame is a platform style.

  17. The largest I've even made is queen sized. Kings are huge!
