December and my Appliances have not seemed to get along for a few years in my house.
One year it was the Dryer dying
And then one Christmas the Refrigerator died - good thing I had the 40 year ol fridge in the basement, and then one year the Oven element decided to not turn off, the next year the broiler decided not to work...
So imagine my Surprise when the night before Christmas Eve my dishwasher decided to give up the ghost....I truly blame my husband - he said -What do you think about using the China and Crystal this year?
And I said it all has to be hand washed
and he said he would help
then the Dishwasher died
and guess what? we used Paper plates!!!
hand washing loses its ease when you do it everyday for every meal and its just not as fun as one imagines!
We looked for Dishwashers - they are in short supply. So after most of the people left, Husband took the dishwasher out and he and Little Bit started repairing. I am proud to say - they got it repaired, and motor replaced and as of this moment - we are back in action.
I understand. IN the past year, starting on Christmas Eve 2020, we got a new fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, toilet, hot water heater, microwave, and had the whole house rewired. I'm waiting for the oven and stove to go out. The kitchen cabinets of 30 yrs are starting to look tattered. Oh, well.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, sounds like my house. We have recently replaced washer, dryer and just now, the range. We have beenlucky to find replacements, I’m not too fussy so I think that has helped.
ReplyDeleteNothing better than a handy husband! And a handy son to boot!!!!! We replaced our dishwasher installed in 2004. It was adorned with duct tape here and there and working when you held your mouth just so. We were staggered at the price of the new ones, but an amazing saleslady at Lowe’s found us the model we wanted in the back and helped us haul it to the car! It cost and arm and a leg, but it is a fantastic dishwasher and I love it. I too love dishwashers.
ReplyDeleteThe toilet in my master bath decided on Christmas Day with a houseful of people to keep running and running and running. I lifted the lid on the tank and gently pulled the ball arm up. Not gently enough for 20 year old plastic. The ball and arm ended up in my hand. The water was turned off to the toilet and then flushed to remove the rest of the water. Yesterday was installation day for the new toilet. Installation continues today. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI feel for you. Our range died in May and immediately ordered a replacement and due to chip shortages during the pandemic, we still haven't gotten the replacement!
ReplyDeleteMy microwave is sputtering its last gasps. I heard about steam convection ovens and am wondering about replacing the microwave with that, but can't find out enough info to make up my mind. So the appliance merryground goes. Glad the dishwasher got fixed.
ReplyDeleteOh my word!! So glad hubby and son were able to repair the dishwasher and put in the new microwave!! The day after my dad died, the washing machine died...the dryer had died earlier so I had purchased a little wooden hanger that worked until the washer died. I didn't want to wash clothes in the bathtub, so I got a new washer/dryer pair - that was fun to have delivered and installed at the beginning of the covid lock downs! December 2020 the furnace died, and I was lucky to get a new one installed within a few days. Talk about a few financial hits. Just glad I was able to get what I needed immediately. Now is definitely not the time for any appliances to go out! Hubby had to replace our frig during the same time-frame. At the same time, the house I bought for my daughter needed a new stove top and oven and HVAC unit. Thank goodness for savings!!! All that during the first year of the crazy time...thankfully, because things were still available!! Now would be a horrible time for anything to go out!
ReplyDeleteOh bummer! It's good that you have "handy" help around to fix things.
ReplyDeleteOur furnace quit during Thanksgiving week about 10 years ago, when we expected a big crowd. We survived with the fireplace and a couple of space heaters in bedrooms. And 3 years ago we replaced every appliance in our house in mid-December. My husband nearly had a stroke over the cost, but the fridge and stove and washer were all dying at the same time, so what else could we do?
Wow that's quite a coincidence! I'm glad your men were able to step up to the challenge. And I love your sense of humor about it. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe are hitting that 12-15 year mark for appliances and so I feel your pain! lol Glad you could replace things right away!
ReplyDeleteYours seem to take holidays to do the same thing as when we discuss extra money we have saved! We never speak of it around the appliances or automobiles!
ReplyDeleteAh, the memories your post brought back. We suffered under the dreaded "Christmas Curse" for a number of years but the last several we have been lucky. The "curse" struck early in November this year when my fairly new iron decided to die. Later that week, the freezer gave up the ghost on Wednesday before we were due to leave on a weeks vacation on Saturday. Thank heaven for the lovely sales woman at Lowe's who found a freezer in stock for me and arranged to get it delivered on Friday. So happy you were able to get your dishwasher repaired.
ReplyDeleteOur dishwasher broke a month or so ago -we found the same shortage of units here. So DH pulled it out, diagnosed the issue, made a home-made replacement part, and we are back in action. (we will keep an eye out for a replacement dishwasher in 2022 since this one is already 8 years over the "life expectancy" and has been repaired at least 3 times during its life). We had a December spell like that a few years ago - dryer, oven, microwave . . . SIGH.
ReplyDeleteThey don't make appliances like they used to. Our washer lasted for over 25 years. Then we finally replaced it. Then a few years later we had to replace it again. Then a few years later again. Our old, damp, musty basement doesn't like washers with computerized parts like the darned new fangled appliances all seem to have. So, now, guess what...we have an old wringer washer in our basement and we've had i for years and haven't had to replace it once! (I make my own laundry soap too). It's back to the basics for this girl! More work but fewer headaches!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, your appliances just seem to know the most awkward time to quit. Our dryer died last year, when getting dryers was really hard. Thank goodness for You Tube, I figured out what was wrong, ordered the parts and My Guy was able to fix it. It's nice to have a handy guy around.
ReplyDeleteA microwave should last 10 plus years. Our hot water heater is leaking. It came with the house (we've been here almost 19 years). Hopefully this will be the only appliance we have to replace this year, too. Only the stove top is still original to the house, everything else has been replaced over the years. My oven was going out for years (not heating properly) and it was a microwave/single oven unit. I replaced it with a double oven and went out and bought a new microwave (on the counter now). That was a great purchase!
