Thursday Thought - Quilt Questions

How many of you , when you are starting a new quilt get asked the questions...

How big will it be?

Who is it for?

Why are you making this one?

My family has learned to not ask those questions, especially if they want the atmosphere of the house to stay calm.. But sometimes I wonder if those who don't quilt, don't quite get that ...

We don't always have the answer to those questions - we just needed to start something!!

One time a Rancher Friend walked into the house and I had a quilt laid out on the floor - he started to walk on it!!! and my youngest son yelled Stop!!!  The funny thing was - the quilt was really out of the way, I mean you had to walk to it to get to it.... When he asked why and learned it was a quilt lay out - he innocently asked - Why are you making another one? You already have a blanket on the couch?

To which my educated children said - Quilt!! Not Blanket... and we like to eat, so we don't ask why!!

The quilt in the photo - I just wanted to make Happy Hawaiian blocks, you know - add color to the winter. As I was making the blocks - started to think - well that would be cool if  Two humans and a dog could snuggle under it on the couch.... But then, as I was laying the blocks out - I really wanted the light/dark effect to be even....which means, sometimes you have to add more blocks....

Fast forward a few months, and!! I finally got that King Bed I have  wanted... My dear sweet husband and I have had a queen for a million years, and I kinda kick at night ( TMI I know) so I wanted more space so the poor man wouldn't leave me.

Did you know a King is a LOT wider than a Queen? I mean a LOT!! So none of my quilts really fit that bed.

My 2 kids that helped us move things around got all excited and said!! Mom!! Make a new one.

Um, ya... Definitely!!! I am on it!! ( Ps I love them)

But then I pulled this Churn dash out and learned if I lay the long way of the quilt across the width of the bed.... It fits width wise!! ( Just barely but it does)  Its not quite long enough to pull over your shoulders... but Spring is almost here - so its good.... But what fun!!

Now this couch quilt has been repurposed for a short time on my new bed!!!

as I plan a new quilt,

with a size in mind

 with a person in mind...

with a purpose in mind

  1. Totally understand how it goes. "Blanket" makes the hair stand up on my neck. Asking why are you making more makes me crazy. Nobody asks them why they just added another streaming service, or how many movies they watch in week or... Love the Hawaiian churn dash!

I am laughing at the bed story. We have had a queen size bed forever. New hous, bigger bed. No king size quilt. However, the top for the new queen size quilt I had made for us is turning into a king size. I need to put another border of pineapple blocks on three sides. A total of 36 blocks. Six down, thirty to go.

  3. My husband and I shared a DOUBLE sized bed for 25 plus years before we upgraded to a king. I LOVE IT! Happy stitching the new king sized quilt for your bed!

  4. Most of my quilt projects start "just because" so I totally get what you're saying. Hooray for a king sized bed and a reason to make more quilts! (And I like how you have your kids trained!)

  5. I LOVE THIS POST!

(p.s. I am a night time kicker, too - king bed is the only way to go)

  6. We got a king size bed for Christmas 2021. I've made 2 king size quilts for it so far. Both were pretty quick to piece (one used exchange blocks I've been collecting for a decade). Have fun making a king size quilt (or two). Borders are helpful.

  7. LOL! I totally get it. We quilt, knit, crochet, embroider, make jewelry because we gave to, not because there’s a practical reason for it. And your Hawaiian themed quilt is a beauty. I’m glad you can make it work on your new bed.

  8. Those are great questions, but not the only ones to ask. Other good questions are: How excited am I about this new idea? and Do you want to deal with all this fabric when I'm gone? Haha Sounds like you have a big quilt to make! :)

  9. We have a had a king bed forever but a few years ago got a split king adjustable. My husband says it saved our marriage because I toss and turn all night- he says he can no longer feel my "gymnastics". I always have quilts in progress for it!
I don't know why I quilt in such volume- it is a terrible mess, it takes SOOO much money, sometimes all those unfinished projects feel like way too much of a burden...yet I am a chronic new project starter!

  11. LOL! Love that post start. I return their stares of incomprehension with questions of my own. Like, why do I need any of that? What difference does that make? and Who knows? I came really close to telling one person it wasn't for her so she didn't have to worry about it. She was edging right up on rude and obnoxious ... but I didn't follow her there. LOL Yesterday, with many projects, including our last QOV pattern where I'm still working on red stars, I just needed to start something new. So I did! And I'm happy and calm. LOL

Your children are the best quilter's children ever!

  13. Absolutely understand!! But I do question why I don't ask myself, do I really have enough fabric for this or that. LOL! Oftentimes I don't, but then that's the "fun"? of it. Bwahahaha!!!!
