to..... Rhode Island!!!
I had never been there and an opportunity arose - and so ... we went.
And I took some photos - Not as many as I normally do, but I'm trying to learn to be selective
( its okay - you can laugh)
I saw my First Lighthouse!!
From the airplane of course - but still!!! A lighthouse.
We landed and headed to Newport RI.
My quilters eye LOVED this roof!!! What a cool pattern right?
Did you know there are a bunch of Mansions there? and they call them summer cottages, and you can tour some of them - so we chose to tour " The Breakers" The summer cottage built by the Vanderbilt family in 1893.
I have decided that it should be mine - it has 70 rooms ( and 35 bathrooms) and I think that would be enough space for my quilts, and fabric, and machines.... and maybe a family member or two!
My husband and sons are adamant about no Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving - but look - gazillionaires do it!!!
Everything is just so ornate - and this is all Gilded Gold -it is built in the Renaissance style - and oh man!! over the top!
I would have a hard time sitting on such a fancy couch!
But look!!
The wood floors... they remind you of????
and???? ( you take the girl from the quilting room, but not the quilter out of the girl haha!)
one of the 35 bathrooms - the bathtub has 4 spigots - 2 bring in salt water from the ocean!! and they said that sometimes they had to run water 6-7 times in it to just heat up the marble so you could take a real bath.... Over the top!!!
mrs C did her tapestry work here:
I am thinking that it could get pretty hot in there - but holee cow the dinners they must have made. One of the tour things said that cooks here went on to be chefs in big restaurants
That is just not a bad view right? I think the complex was 31 acres and so very green - you look right over the ocean at the point!
us - standing in front of our new summer cottage... we decided we should keep it! haha
and that was Day 1.........
Well sort of - it was restaurant week in Newport so for dinner we went to a restaurant called TSK - they sold you steak by the ounce.... and the small steaks were 28 ozs..... I had Scallops ;-)
70 rooms and 35 bathrooms. Guess that is ok for all your fabric and sewing supplies but if you could one bathroom, maybe I could visit...just a thought. Good call at dinner. I too would choose the scallops. Have fun and thank you for sharing your trip :-) I would have taken a couple of my quilts for photoshoots :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I've always thought if I toured New England I'd visit RI. I had no idea about the mansions. How nice that you chose that one to keep. ;) Sounds like you had a wonderful getaway.
ReplyDeleteThink of all the friends you could have come for long weekend for sewing retreats! I'm glad I don't have to clean it! Happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteA trip to visit your lawyers? Yay, Alycia!! Thanks for the sight-seeing photos, too.
ReplyDeleteWhen you get settled in your cottage I'd love to visit! We could even talk quilting.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! The 'cottage' is amazing! I could just imagine myself in a green gown walking in the front garden! lol Nice eye for all of the patterns!
ReplyDeleteRhode Island is so nice (except for the roads!). Chris was stationed there AGES ago and we really enjoyed Newport. The food was great!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Looks like a fun place to visit! Thank you for sharing your pics with us.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! Glad that you took in the East Coast sites (and eats).
ReplyDeleteI was born and grew up in Rhode Island just outside of Providence. It is a really pretty state and Newport is amazing. I haven't been back in probably 20 years as most of my family isn't there anymore. Glad you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteSuper trip for you! Thrilled you have the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteWow...so amazing. It's strange to read that you've never seen a lighthouse. Lots here in Nova Scotia. ☺
ReplyDeleteFirst lighthouse! Mansions! Newport! how exciting for you. I have been a few times, and I find the experience of the mansions so overwhelming, that anyone could live that way. What brings you out East? Fun fun fun for you. I live part time on an island in Maine, and on our walks around the island, we see two lighthouses, and 2 more on the ferry ride here (15 minutes). It is a rather delightful place to live.
