Excitement ... and a problem

So.... many of you have ever been to Houston? To the International Quilt Festival?

My excitement comes with the fact that I. GET. TO. GO.!!!!  I am so excited. now, I do have to work - but that's perfectly okay - I LOVE who I get to work for!!

Now with this excitement comes a conundrum.... are you ready to dig in and help me?  Okay - here goes - I am a mom of 3 boys.... I live in the middle of nowhere with lots of dirt, I only go to town once a week.... so my um... wardrobe? Ya - I think that's what we will call it, consists of Jeans, dirty Jeans, Sweatshirts, and T Shirts.  I think I may have a pair of Black pantsish type trousers, but even those are denim....

What does one wear to an International Quilt Festival? And to work.....

Oh!! Do you want to know where I will be? I will be in the Modern Quilts Unlimited Booth!!!  Come and See me!!! Booth 1832... yep - that's where I will be!!

So all of you who have been there - fill me in!!! What to wear, what to take, what to see, how to find my plane..just kidding about that..but it has been 7 years since I went ANYWHERE by myself!!  ( my kid have reminded me of this a lot today!!)

Here I am - so you know what I look like... COME SEE ME!!! Check out the new Magazine!!!

  1. Congrats! I'm going too so I'll look for you - wear jeans and a t-shirt so we'll be sure to recognize you. And comfortable shoes - fashion stops at the ankle!

  2. never been to a quilt show, but working a doll show, JoAnne isn't kidding about shoes. Wear something that makes you happy but also something that won't get in your way or make you feel uncomfortable or too aware of your clothing. If you NEVER wear a skirt, don't do it. Also, plan something with layers as it may be either too hot, too cold or both in the exhibition/vendor rooms. And since you have MANY contacts throughout the quilting world, you may want to think about how your outfit will do with hugging. ;) k.

  3. Totally agree about the shoes and the layers. You will be on your feet and convention centers can move from hot to cold and back quickly. A couple pairs of black slacks and associaterted tops with a jacket that comes off and on easily should do you. Be comfortable, the days are long. I have not been to Quilt Fest but have worked many knitting shows. Take care of your feet first.

  4. Pictures, plan on having a lot of pictures taken with all your fans. You are a country girl so wear jeans, comfy shoes and for tops, wear something that will look good in all the pictures that will soon be posted on blogs around the world!

    Have a great time

  6. I love travel knits...couple of dark pants, jacket fun colorful tops,. Not too heavy tops. Not too heavy in the suitcase and leaves room for fabric to come home! See you there. Oregonquilt

  7. Maxi skirts are great! They are stylish, can be dressy or casual - depending on the top you are wearing, easy to work in and easy to make in an hour. They look great with casual flats, heels and boots.
    Have lots of fun!

  8. Congratulations! How exciting!

I've only been to one quilt show and the over-riding principle I learned was: Wear comfortable shoes! Think: concrete floors + standing + all day!

Some booths brought in the foam tiles that fit together to make a cushioned "floor" for the booths... hope your booth does!

Space in booths is limited so you don't want anything that will catch on items in the booth or make it hard for you to move around.

I agree with the lady who mentioned "layers"... some folks are hot-natured and others get cold easily... layers will help.

I don't remember anyone in any of the booths dressing up (suits, dresses, etc.)... slacks at best. Saw lots of jeans and shorts (July quilt show).

Definitely go for comfort... and what you'd be comfortable wearing when representing the folks of Modern Quilts Unlimited! Folks will be looking at the stuff in the booths and not to see what outfit you have on.

Quilt show attendees are all about the quilts, fabrics, the latest and greatest machine/techinique/gadget, and fun!

I was at the Houston showl back in 2010. I agree with the other gals....wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Clothing that you may have seen at our local shows such as Quilt-A-Fair, Denver National Quilt Show and so on would fit well.in Houston, too. Be prepared to be tempted to buy, buy....have fun!!!!

  11. I think you have gotten lots of great tips so far. My only suggestion is to see the Eye of the Quilter photography exhibit because I will have 2 pictures displayed! Also, a quilt that I just quilted will be on display in the Moda booth so be sure to check that out! :) And have a blast!!!

  12. How exiting for you! Sure wish I was going. If I was, I'd be in your same spot with the wardrobe challenge. But seriously, everybody is right when they say wear your most comfortable shoes! And, HAVE FUN -- we want a full report when you get home!

  13. Okay Alycia. I live about 50 miles west of Houston and have been going to the Festival for the last 12 years. CASUAL DRESS darlin'! Don't worry about dressing up - nobody is there to see your clothes. Be comfortable - jeans are fine - T-shirts are fine - hoodies are fine. Comfy shoes (maybe take 2 pair for the booth so you can switch) - we go in FitFlops but used to go in tennis shoes. Now we're used to the stroll. It will be packed beyond belief so stick to a small purse - some cash, credit cards, phone and kleenex. And keep it close and protected - it's easy to get distracted and leave important stuff behind. You will have a great time - particularly since you'll have time to get used to the buzz while you're working in the booth. Are you going to Spree during Quilt Market? Now that's a crazy night! Have fun and I'll look for you in the booth.

  14. I have no quilt festival expertice at all... But first and foremost be yourself :) remember that your not going because of how you look or dress. If I was anywhere nearby I would stop by but.. Oh well...I'm in Copenhagen. So be sure to just enjoy it, get the most of it and have a really, really good time there.

  15. Congratulations Alycia. I wish I was going to be there to meet up too. You'll have a wonderful time and the creative juices will be working over time from all that you see. Dress for comfort and have fun.
