2004 Block of the Month Quilt

One of my January goals was to finish a UFO - it was a Block of the month Star quilt from the Quilters Stash in Greeley ( now they are in Windsor) . I had finished all the way to November then put it in a bag ( gasp!) So I got it out and when I did I found that I had purchased 3 different border fabrics for it, as well as a few extra FQ's - My And now I know how my fabric stash grew!!!

Anyways - this is where it is at the moment - what do you think it needs? I can't decide if its finished ( because I am getting tired of it) or If I want to add one more border. I am thinking maybe a Light Blue Border??? Its current size is 60 x 80 - Well I'll keep looking at it........

  1. The only way you'll know for sure is to try various colors, step back, and decide what you think. I wouldn't use too light a blue. The outside border is like the frame on a picture. It's a stopping place for the eye that leads the eye back onto the quilt. A border that is too light will let the eye wander off the quilt and it may not likely find it's way back. For this reason I like a medium-dark to dark border on all my quilts. On the other hand your sashing is so dark a dark border might be overpowering. The only way to know is to try different options on the quilt itself.

  2. Do you applique? Sometimes a border with applique looks nice around a pieced top. I agree with Patti audition different things and see what works best for you. The dark blue sashing is great design element.

  3. I would be inclined to use a yellow print to sash between the blocks and also a narrow border around all, then finish with a dark blue wider border. Of course, that may make it larger than you want it to be. The blocks are lovely.

I think I'd do a gold one, a mid blue one (like in the second block up from the bottom middle) and navy binding. It's going to be beautiful - the blocks are wonderful :-)

  5. I saw a really pretty sashing on a feathered star quilt in the latest Fons and Porter. it has a 9 patch with a striped sashing...includes another couple of small blocks so the 9 patch looks larger. I would happy to find you a picture..or scan the photo for you to see. Yellow and blue would look GREAT in there! Beth in chilly AZ
