2026 Rainbow Scrap Challenge has begun

Whoo Hoo its a New Year!!!

I have finally chosen a Block for this Months Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!

Are you ready?

Ta Da!! Little Blue Chunky Churndashes!! ( Free pattern on Quiltville.com)

I spent a few moments looking thru my scraps hoping that a Block would come to me!

As I had used fabric this past two years - I cut the leftovers into 5 inch squares, 3 1/2 inch squares and 2 1/2 inch squares. Looking at the 2 1/2 inch square pan ( yes ! I used an old cookie tray to stack them on) I could see that one swift tail wag of a dog - and we would have a mess...

I remembered how much fun I had making these little blocks a million years ago - and thought it was time again! And when Bonnie allowed me to write it as a Mystery Stitch Along in 2009!!! Wowzers!!!

Wasn't that a blast from the past ...

now - here is the question? What is the Over/Under on how many of these blocks will be made in January? and!! Will it use up my 2 1/2 inch square pile????

  1. What a great pattern for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Sew glad that you were able to use up some blue scraps and make beautiful blocks at the same time!

  2. Love the Chunky Churndashes. I am considering the RSC, I might follow along unofficially. ;)

  3. Good idea! My guess is 130 blocks and that you will not use all of the squares!

  4. I can't say I have seen that block before. Off I go to see it in your mystery 2009 post;)

  5. Great minds again - I'm doing 6" traditional churn dash blocks for one of my block sets this year too. The other traditional block I'm doing for RSC is a 12" Snails Trail. I've been gathering blue for these but didn't get any of them sewn yet.

  8. You already have 8 made, so I'm saying 3/7 for my Over/Under. Also, my guess is that pile will NOT be used up, because they never are!

  9. Those are neat blocks, Alycia! They will be pretty in every color. I'm guessing you have enough blue scraps to make a whole quilt of these January! 😜

  10. What a great start on your RSC! Bonnie is super generous and how fun to revisit a previous block! You probably could use up your 2 1/2 inch square pile IF you weren't also adding to it as you go. . .LOL

  11. Great choice for the month. I'm guessing 30 blocks and that there will still be 2 1/2" squares left over, but not for trying hard to use them all up!!

  12. Love this block! As a I am trying to figure out what to handle on a retreat this week and what to do...maybe I will bring my blue scraps and see if I get inspired! I am dying to lighten the load!

  13. I say under 20 blocks and NO, you will not use up your stack!

  15. I love your Chunky Churndashes! I think they would lend themselves well to a lot of interesting sashing possibilities. But you’re making a lot, so maybe no sashing needed at all! Happy New Year!

  16. Great RSC block choice. It is so dramatic with the bright blue contrasted against white and black. BTW the cookie sheet of scraps wasn't pictured. Knowing how prolific you are I estimate you will make 50 blocks.

  17. You've got a great start on those RSC blocks. Hopefully it at least empties the bins enough that they close. I've decided someone should write a horror story about how scraps just keep multiplying. Maybe we should put that idea in Steven King's head? Maybe it would be motivating?

  18. I like it. I love making churn dash blocks except the HSTs this block cures that.

  19. My Chunky Churn Dash is on the couch next to me as I type. I love that block. When I made mine I thought of each block as its own little quilt color-wise. It was a lot of fun to make. You've got a good start on your blocks already,

  20. Great block for the RSC this year, Alycia! Sometimes you just have to let the fabric do the talking! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great week.

  21. Chunky Churn Dash looks to be a fun quilt. I think it'll look so pretty when laid out with its RSC friends. Great start with lots of pretty blues!
