the next day was a nice dry but cold day so we attempted the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton.
There are NO guardrails.
There a Lot of Steep downhills to see from the passenger seat.
I might have screamed once ( or twice)
You can google more about it - but the sign said in 1883 it cost $10K per mile to build it - so that is one of the reasons it got its name... Oh my!
Ready?
My son drove, K held on the Hand holds, i took photos....
You can see the road to the left of the photo... No Guard Rails you all... None...
There is still some mining equipment in the river that has been abandoned. I think it was also to original location of the hot springs, but now the water is piped out to the Hot springs in town.
It was a nice sightseeing trip. I was surprised tho - the other two days there were almost no people in town. This time when we got back, the restaurants had waiting lines... so we went to the Saloon!
The Full Tilt Saloon - it was a cool little joint. We walked in and were 3 of the 6 people in the joint.... got our food, and by the time it had arrived.... the place was full. With One Waiter - I felt so bad for him, but he did a great job.. and we were full!!

You have no idea how much I'm enjoying your photos! You must be quite brave to go in winter with all the snow. But it's so beautiful. I've been on Million Dollar highway recently - watching a YouTube video while on the treadmill - lol! The mountains are breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful trip!
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting trip with beautiful scenic views; however, I'm glad I was not riding along on that road.
ReplyDeleteAbout 23 years ago we took a snowmobile tour near Silverton that went through some mining camps up to the top of a mountain. It was a glorious trip that I’ve never forgotten. We couldn’t find a trip like it when we went back about 10 years ago. My sister lived in Colorado Springs for years, so I got to enjoy Colorado often. Now this Georgia girl gets to enjoy Colorado through your adventures! May have to sneak back out again!
ReplyDeleteWhat a trip! I love the photos of the views you shared.
ReplyDeleteSilverton is so packed when the train from Durango comes in I think 3 times a day in the summer season - when we stayed in Silverton last year in September we made sure to remember the train schedule so we could eat!! the places are packed with the train tourist then. We did eat at the Shady Lady one day and there was a nice tavern type of place I don't remember the name that I had a great piece of salmon and Mike had a good burger - staying at the hotel was nice for one time but won't again everything was so expensive and limited places to eat - we where there 3 days and drove to Ouray one day - we have been to all of these places numerous times over the years.,
ReplyDeleteLooks great! We rode the Million Dollar Highway on our Gold Wing many years ago...before kids...my son is 35 years old!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're all safe. That drive isn't for the faint of heart. You'll have to go back in the summer, it is beautiful with all the waterfalls and green green green. You could frame that first picture of the dilapidated building. There used to be a narrow gauge train that you could ride from Silverton to Durango. I never did that but heard it was really beautiful
ReplyDeleteSo cool!!! To get to our friend's house north of Canõn City we drive a lot of switchbacks with sheer drops on the sides. I am the one holding on for dear life!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI remember those scary roads! We visited Silverton back in 1977!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!
That's an incredible drive! We did that drive to Silverton too, we were on the preseason side of things as we went during spring break. Silverton wasn't busy, so we got to see most of it, though a few things weren't open. What a fun trip.
