A Log Cabin Challenge

At the beginning of this year I started in the RSC challenge, and as I was figuring out my block that I would make I started making lots of Log Cabin'ish blocks.   At the end of January - I went to my guild meeting and out president issued a Log Cabin Quilt Challenge for 2014.

The Catch - the Quilt had to be completed by December 2nd!  ( and completed meant bound too! ugh)

I was in Limbo - Do I do my Color challenges as a log cabin? Do I start something else?  What to do...... well..... I was indecisive for a while!

I remembered seeing a Log Cabin quilt in 30's Prints on Quilting is More Fun Than Housework - and I thought - I could do that, bust my stash of 30's, enter the challenge, and have a finished quilt at the end of the year....

So I grabbed my stash, and I started cutting 2 inch strips.... and I started sewing, and I realized that there was a LOT of stash in that bucket....  I persevered and On December 2nd I had a finished quilt , bound and all ready to hang at our Guild's show.....

Only one problem... I am not in love with it..... I am in like with it.... and it will probably grow on me, but I wonder.... usually my projects take a stall out phase.... this one couldn't.... so is that why I am kind of mad at it?

I couldn't get a great hanging photo, I had the longer lens on since I had just been at a basketball game.. So I came home and laid it on the floor.  All that stuff you read about how hard it is to take quilt photos at night?  Yep! They are right.... lighting is just rough.

I changed the design up a bit from the photos I saw.. I didn't want to copy exact - and I wanted it to be 72 x 90 at least.  I did a LOT of feather quilting, and I practiced scale of feathers on it.

I am truly thinking that I am going to put it back on the machine. I ran out of quilting time, knowing that it had to be bound. But I think I would like to go fill the unquilted border spots with lines - lots of echoing lines....

And that.... is the Finish that was my Anonymous Finish for November. But it was actually finished on December 2nd at 3pm....  because I had to leave for a basketball game at 3:15, and get this to the guild meeting that night at 6:30 ....

Oh.... and look at this:

I still have scraps!!!!  UGh!!!  I forgot about the amount of scraps I was going to generate!!

And This is what is left of my 30's Stash.... I see at least 3 more quilts in there???? Do you????

But a finish is a good thing. A very good thing. I'll be happy to swap you your 1930s stash for an equal amount of plaid stash.

Wow -- you surprise me. Somehow I never pictured you having a 30's stash. I agree, those empty spots need quilting. If not echoing, then maybe pebbles. I like the quilt -- I like the way the blocks float. It's definitely a "girly" quilt. But a HUGE congrats to you for sticking with it and making your deadline.

I love your quilt! And your quilting is beautiful! I am sure it was a big hit at your guild meeting. And congratulations in getting it done in time with minutes to spare!

Nice quilt! I decided to make a 30s log cabin too. What is your neutral? What size are your logs?

I'll rap you if I run out of 30s,,,,,lol

Congratulations on your finish!
What is it about 30's fabrics? I am determined to whittle down (if not completely eliminate) my 30's stash, too. Stephanie and Marianne on Stashbusters/Heartstings have their "30's bin bust." As someone said, 30's fabrics were made to be paired with white or solid. I think that color analysts say that the value of 30's prints is the same from print to print so when there are a lot of them next to one another the effect can be a blob.

I love the layout and you did a great job Alycia! I think the reason you are "in like" with it, is because you want to do more quilting on it. I agree it may need something to fill in those spaces, but, your feathers are gorgeous! Knock out another quilt with those scraps!

It is amazing how little fabric it takes to make a top, and how much it takes to cover the back. Love the quilt you made. Amazing quilting you did on it... especially with a deadline.
I do love the quilts made with the 30s repro fabrics. They are quite cheery.
Hugs

Hi Alycia! I found your blog on crazy mom quilts. =) 30s fabric. Log cabin. What's not to love!!! =) Congrats on your finish! Isn't it wonderful to have a finish though? Especially one that meets a deadline? Man, I don't even know what that feels like lol. I was going through my scraps and thought that a log cabin quilt might actually be the best way to utilize all of those scraps. =) Good job!

I love it! The good thing about not liking a finished quilt this close to Christmas is that it can always be a Christmas gift to someone!

So pretty!! Congrats on getting it done just in time. . . with ink dripping as we used to say when getting ready for an audit LOL

Even though it is a log cabin (geometric) design, your challenge quilt has a lovely, soft quality to it, enhanced by your wonderful quilting. The photo taken from the floor brings out the log cabin effect. Love it!!!

So glad you were able to finish your quilt in time, though It can be hard to work on a deadline. It is a tough balancing act between getting things done and enjoying the process. Hope you fall back in love with it eventually.

Well it does look really great and congrats on completing the challenge.

Beautiful quilt! Congrats on the finish. Maybe once you've been able to step away from it for a few days, you'll find you love it.

What an amazing design! I hope the only thing keeping love from happening is the deadline, and now that you've finished (or almost finished...), it will worm its way into your heart the way it is worming into mine!

Well did you fall in love with this one yet? I hope so, it definitely deserves to be loved! I certainly LOVE it! I love on point quilts and on point log cabins make it even better. The only thing better than log cabins is feathers on the log cabin quilt! Love, love, love.
